I need some guidance. I'm living in Pattaya on a one year, multi-entry extension of stay, for retirement (I think that is the correct terminology.) My current extension expires March 28th. I will be returning to the US next month, to help two family members who are both battling cancer. I may not return to Thailand, until after March 28th.
In the past I've seen comments in this group about people canceling visas. My question is, do I need to notify Thai immigration if I will not be returning before my current extension expires? Is there anything I need to do, anyone I need to notify, or can I just leave, and not come back, and not incur a "black mark" on my record, in the Thai immigration database?

TLDR : Answer Summary
The user, residing in Pattaya on a one-year, multi-entry extension of stay for retirement, is seeking guidance on whether they need to notify Thai immigration if they leave for the US and do not return before their extension expires on March 28th. Comments reveal that if the individual does not return before the expiration, the extension will simply cancel without incurring any negative marks on their immigration record. It is suggested that upon return to Thailand, the user consider obtaining a NON-O-A multi-entry visa through their local Thai consulate in the US.

Based on the craziness going on at immigration if you do not return before your visa expires get a new one in the US. Can be done by mail and those embassies/consulates count things like investment income.
And if and when you do decide to return to Thailand you may want to consider obtaining a non imm o-a multi entry visa via your local Thai Consulate or the Thai Embassy while in the US before you return.
Good suggestion, BUT you can only get a year-long, multi-entry Non-Immigrant Type O-A (Long Stay) visa from the thai consulates in Chicago, Los Angeles, New York & Washington DC.. None of the other honorary thai consulates can issue them.
You're fine. On yearly extensions of stays based on retirement, marriage and raising kids, if you don't get back into the country BEFORE the "extension of stay permitted up to" date which in your case is the 28th of March 2019, it just cancels and you start all over when you come back..
