I was born in Thailand, moved to the UK when I was 4. I've been trying to get my Thai ID card for a while so I can permanently move back to Thailand and the short of this long journey, is they are requesting a DNA test and photo evidence of me and my mother- I am flying my Mum out to Thailand from UK to do all of this. However I just found I did get issued a Thai passport once as a kid- which my step dad just found but totally forgot about. It expired in 2002.
Does this make a difference? Should I be able to get a Thai passport and Thai ID without all the extra time and expense of the DNA test and endless trips back to Thailand to get this sorted?

TLDR : Answer Summary
The user, who was born in Thailand and later moved to the UK, is facing challenges in obtaining a Thai ID card and renewing a Thai passport. They recently learned of an expired Thai passport issued during childhood, which could simplify their application process. Comments suggest that having this passport may facilitate renewing both the passport and ID card without the need for a DNA test or additional travel to Thailand. It's advised to check with the Thai embassy in the UK regarding the renewal process and necessary documentation, such as a birth certificate.
If u was born in Thailand all you should need is your birth certificate. My son has had no problems. Its sounds like there is miscommunication somewhere, the DNA is for those born outside Thailand and wanting to be naturalized.
my son is going through all this at the moment but he was born in uk. technically you already are a thai citizen as you must be on your mums tabian bhan to have got a thai passport. so renew your passport and apply for a thai id at the ampur district office you are registered at . as nice as they are at london thai embassy they just continually put obstacles in your way . by the way you can be called up for two years national service are you aware of this?
you have Thai passport. what else you need? You are Thai. Go with this to Thai embassy in Thailand, and renew your new passport. This is very normal to do.
Go to the Thai Embassy in London, my daughter went through them and was successful at 26 years of age. The important document is a Thai Birth certificate
You will have to go to Thailand and get included on the family book where your parents come from. You can then apply for an ID card and passport. You can’t do this at a foreign country. That was the information my wife received from the consulate general in Sydney Australia regarding our son. They can issue passports, but only to children under 5. My son had a passport, but once over 5 they have to do it in Thailand.
I went through the whole DNA deal with my son about 20 years ago . He already had a Thai passport and I wanted to get his US passport , which I did . He didn’t have a Thai ID card but his Thai birth certificate was very useful through all of this , do you still have your Thai birth certificate ?
Why can’t you go to the uk Thai embassy and renew your old Thai passport and get your ID CARD from them , I have a Thai wife and children and they have done both in the pass ,
Mikkel Kruse thank you! It's actually that group I thought I was posting in but accidentally clicked this one! I feel like a right plonker! Cheers for this 👍🏽
Shouldn't you be able to go to the Thai embassy in the UK, bring your old passport together with the birth certificate and get a new Thai passport? How I can understand so are you still a citizen of the Kingdom of Thailand. Or have you given it up to be a UK citizen? I think you can have double citizenship in the UK!
Ken Lee as long as the person has 2 biological Thai parents, this is not the case. But when a person has 1 Thai and 1 other country citizen, then the law is like you say.
Rune Nilsen well thats what im hoping is possible now? I was told I didn't have a Thai passport from a British step dad who has spent his life sabotaging me so this I can deal with. But I always thought I must get a Thai ID card before my Thai passport could be issued and for that I've had to do multiple trips back to Thailand over these years where im at the stage of flying my mum out for a dna test in a few months. But if I can save on 2 flights and a dna test that would be the most spectacular news of my life!!
Pang Thanomlak if you gave up Thai nationality? You must know that, because you have to sign on it. Also minor can not give up his nationality. Only adult can do it. Your step father or mother can not do this without you.
Pang Thanomlak I would think you could have done it without the passport too, only the birth certificate and an UK id, but probably it will be easier to show an old Thai passport when you have that. I wish you the best of luck 🤞
The fact that you were once issued a passport should make a huge difference, I would go to the Thai embassy in London, see if they can help or advise you.
Randall Johnson I just went and got my son ID card and passport two months ago. He is 50 now, so there was no problems. To clear from the draft, a man has to be at least 47 years old, if you are citizen.
Randall Johnson that sounds ridiculous! Why would they want to fine him for not being in the army when he was four years old when his mother took him to live in the UK? He didn't have any say in that, it's not like he was of the age where he could have been conscripted. He's now ten years past the age where he could be conscripted, unless perhaps Thailand became involved in a full scale war.
