If already in Thailand, does having more than 6 months remaining validity on the passport matter in the case of extending an ED visa?

In the process of renewing for my son and it hit me that his passport expires in less than this...and the American embassy's appointments are a month out.

TLDR : Answer Summary
Having more than 6 months remaining on a passport is not a requirement for extending an ED visa in Thailand. However, the extension will only be valid until the passport's expiration date. In the specific case discussed, even though the child's passport was set to expire soon, immigration provided a one-year extension as usual, allowing ample time for passport renewal later.

Thanks everyone. It's for a 9 year old so we can't use the mail-in passport renewal from the embassy.

However, turned out to be no problem at all at immigration. They gave him another 1 year as usual, so now we have plenty of time to renew the passport later.

If an adult passport renewal it's done entirely online and by mail in about 2 weeks. Google adult passport renewal US Embassy Bangkok.

It won’t matter in the case of getting the extension, but the date of the extension will only be up until the expiry of the passport. So for example if your son would normally get a year extension of their Ed visa, but the passport runs out on June 1st, then the extension will only apply until June 1st and you’ll have to do another one when you get the new passport.
