Quick question about 1 year extension on non B based on work as a teacher. My 1 year extension expires dec 19 so my school needs to re apply for 1 year extension before the due date. My question is if my passport has less than 6 month left to expire, will that affect the 1 year extension renewal? In asking because with the covid situation im not sure when i can renew my passport.

TLDR : Answer Summary
The expiration of your passport can affect the renewal of your 1-year extension on a Non-B visa. If your passport has less than 6 months left before it expires at the time of application for the extension, the extension granted will only be valid until your passport's expiration date. You will then need to apply for a new extension after renewing your passport.

I'd say you need to start looking in to how you're going to renew your passport BEFORE you need to use it for the extension. It's July, your extension isn't up until Dec, so you've got 5 months to figure it out :)

yes i am searching. Problem is i am venezuelan and we already have problems with passport renewals even before corona.

I'm not sure if it applies to Venezuela, but most embassies in Thailand can process new passports for their citizens. My country (South Africa) takes up to six months to process the application.

sadly my embassy is in malasyia and it needs around 3 month to process and extension on the passport not even getting a new one. And this is if there is no covid

IF your passport has less than the amount of time you would get the extension for left on it then you ONLY get the extension until the passport expires and then when you get a new passport you apply for a whole NEW extension all over again. (They do NOT give you the rest of the year's extension when you get a new passport)

and when you say re apply for a whole new extension you mean it will be as if i never had an extension before? Or will it bea simple process of renewal?

just so you're clear you don't "renew" anything. You apply for a yearly extension and it runs out in a year, then you apply for a brand NEW yearly extension. So every year you're applying for a new extension.

IF you apply for an extension on a passport valid less than that year you get the extension until the passport runs out and then when you get your new passport you go apply for a NEW yearly extension again.
