Hopefully quick question: To extend a non-O visa does the passport (USA) need to have 6 months remaining validity?

My passport expires next January and my visa extension is in August, so trying to decide which to do first- passport renewal or visa extension. Thank you.

UPDATE in case anyone is interested. I applied for new USA passport by mail (Thai Post EMS) sent to the US Consulate in Chiang Mai. Got back new passport in hand today. So that was 15 days from start to finish. Very good service. Have a nice day ;-)

TLDR : Answer Summary
To extend a Non-O visa in Thailand, your passport must be valid for at least the duration of the extension you are applying for. If your passport has less than six months of validity left, the extension could be limited to the expiration date of your passport, which means you should renew your passport before applying for a visa extension to ensure you receive the full valid time.

I think you're missing the point

;

IF you apply for a yearly extension in August with a passport that's only valid until next January, you will get an extension until January. Period end of story. You ONLY get a year extension IF your passport is valid for a year from the date your current extension expires.

SO what you need to do is get a new passport BEFORE you go apply for a new extension. THEN take the old passport, the new passport and the letter from the consulate stating you got a new passport in thailand to the immigration office and get the stamps moved to the new passport.

There's no other way around it or all you're gonna get is an extension until January.

'Kay looks like I'm submitting my passport renewal by mail asap, and pray it comes back before extension time. Thanks again for your advice.

Understood. Main concern with that scenario is passport renewal may take longer than my extension date (2 months from now) so that would mean no extension possible. Would prefer to just extend visa on old passport, then renew passport before January and take it from there. Thanks!

each day you delay...up to you.

, and again if you're holding a US passport I just had a verified report that someone mailed in their packet for a new passport and had their passport back in their hands at their house in 8 days.

They quote 3 weeks on the website. You HAVE time, apply for a new passport now. It's not gonna take 2 months to get a new US passport.

I will renew my passport by mail to Bangkok Embassy. They say up to 6 weeks, which could interfere with my extension. So again the main question is: can I do a (1 year) non-O visa extension with a passport valid less than 6 months? Thanks

@Leo ****
you will not get one year.

Your extension of stay is linked to having a valid passport for the full year.

ok thanks. Maybe leave the thread open a bit longer in case some offer further advice.

But after I renew the passport, don't I just transfer the visa extension to the new passport with same time validity? It's a one-year extension.

@Leo ****
The renewal will only be as long as the validity of your passport. You will have to get another extension of stay when it expires in January.

>can I do a (1 year) non-O visa extension with a passport valid less than 6 months?

Yes you can. The extension of stay is valid for either one year, OR the remaining validity of your passport, whatever is less.
Benjamin ******
Visas can not get extended. I'm assuming you're getting an extension of stay based, correct?

The extension of stay is valid for either one year, OR the remaining validity of your passport, whatever is shorter.
