Do I need to renew my passport before my NON-O retirement visa renewal in Thailand?

I am currently on a non o retirement visa, goes from April to April. My passport renewal is due in August 26. The immigration officer I deal with said I need to renew my passport before my next renewal in April 25 , is this correct? I can only think the reason maybe because I won't have 6 months left on my passport when it's due in August 26, can anyone enlighten me to the reason. Thanks

TLDR : Answer Summary
The user is currently on a NON-O retirement visa valid until April and is concerned about passport renewal due on August 26. An immigration officer advised renewing the passport before the visa extension in April, likely due to the requirement of having at least 6 months remaining on the passport at the time of extension. Comments from the community confirm that without 6 months left, the extension may only be issued until the passport expires, not for the full year.

It'll be because you don't have 6 mths left on your passport.

For most purposes where a passport is needed, you need to have more than 6 month left before renewal.

when you do again in April 25 there will not be 6 months left on passport by the time it gets to April 26, so they can not do 12 months.

Yeah, they are not going to like you not having 6 months on your passport. The best case is that they will only stamp you in until the end of you passport so you won't get a full year extension.

I have an LTR visa. Normally they would have given me a stamp for 5 years out but my passport was to expire before that. They only stamped me in until the end of my passport. I did get a new passport and they transferred the visa and updated the end date of my permission to stay stamp.

Your extension is only issued until your passport ending date. It is not dated past your passport expire date. That is why. If your passport expires in August then your extension is only dated until August, not April.

yes I know that but reread what I posted. My renewal is due April 2025 to April 2026. My passport expires August 2026 but I've been told to renew passport before April 2025

if the dates you've posted are correct you will have more than 15 months left on your current passport when you go for your next Extension of Stay in April 2025, so I don't see where the problem is.

I don't see a problem but the immigration officer said I needed to renew my passport before my next extension in April 2025. I wondered if he had a genuine reason or a mistake

maybe he mistook the expiry date as 2025, not 2026, but as I said if your passport has more than 12 months left at the time of extension there is no problem.
