TLDR : Answer Summary
The discussion revolves around the process of canceling an extension of stay in Thailand for individuals over 50. A user seeks clarity on whether a written letter to immigration suffices or if additional documentation is necessary for cancellation. Comments highlight varying opinions, with some stating that if one leaves the country, the extension can automatically become invalid without formal cancellation. Others suggest that this might affect future visa applications. Overall, the conversation reflects uncertainties about the immigration rules and the implications of not formally canceling an extension.

Update on my visit to Ayutthaya immigration. Sat down with immigration officer ,had my cancelation letter on hand told her I need to cancel my extension as i’ll be leaving Thailand before it ends (April 2019). Lady officer said no need to cancel just leave no problem and if and when return apply for non o visa again.

Thank you Shauny for your follow-up message. As we all know different offices handle things a little differently at times so if anyone else asks the same at other locations, hopefully they will share their experience also. Thanks again.👍

Strange rule, canceling extension of stay would be understandable if one got a divorse, quit a job or school before the extension expired but being over 50 and simply leaving the country before the extension expires should be enough😕

If you not going to come back nobody will arrest you for not using your visa.

Are you legally required to cancel it ? Surely if you leave without a re-entry permit that immediately cancels it on exit. Or if there is even a remote chance of returning buy a single re-entry permit for 1000 baht , if you come back before expiry - no visa required. If you don't it runs its allotted time and expires naturally

Please report back on what you find out on this particular situation. I have always wondered about this rule if you are on an extension of stay based on being over 50. It seems to me as kind of a grey area and I would be interested on the results of your inquiry. Thanks.

A visa cancels if you leave but an extension(which i'm on) doesn't i read somewhere if you don't cancel an extension and you come back and apply again you get problems with immigration and they fine you for overstay ,not sure how it works.

I'm not leaving until 2nd October i thought they would just stamp me up till that date if i go in tomorrow..I'm going back to the UK i don't know when i will return so best to cancel avoid any problems in the future.

you should be able to walk in and cancel your extension BUT keep in mind once you do it IF you don't immediately apply for a new extension OR get the 7 day extension denied stamp to leave in a week for 1900baht you have to leave the country that day

Just curious why are you canceling it?
