Do I need to transfer my daughters' ED visas to their new passports before leaving Thailand?

Hello...

So my daughters had an ED visa on their previous passports...

Visa are expiring the 30th of June.

Now they have new passports and the old ones have the corner cut.

They are leaving Thailand the 26th and they won’t be coming back.

Two questions:

1- Do I absolutely need to transfer the ED on the new passports? (If yes I am screwed as today is Friday the 22)

2- Do I need to cancel the ED as they will be leaving before the expiration date? (If yes.. well... you know... lol)

Thanks

TLDR : Answer Summary
The user inquires about the necessity of transferring their daughters' Education (ED) visas from old passports to new ones, considering they are leaving Thailand soon and will not return. Key points from the answers indicate that carrying both old and new passports at the time of departure may suffice if they are not returning. However, for future visa applications, it's advisable to cancel any extension of stay associated with the ED visas to avoid potential fines for overstay.

, If you're sure they're not comin' back you can just show up at the airport with both passports and the letter from the school saying they are not studying anymore and get stamped out on the new passport.

The OFFICIAL way to do it though is to take them to the immigration office move the extension stamps from one passport to another THEN cancel the ED visa extension with documentation from the school saying the day they are flying out of the country is the date they stop studying.

it's not a big thing, just a letter on their letter head stating that student name xxx with passport yyy is stopping studying on zzz

make sure they stamp it with the school stamp too

Like you said, if they're not returning just show both passports when they fly out. It won't "officially" cancel the extension but they'll be stamped out of thailand. And they won't have a problem getting a visa from a thai consulate if they want to come back.

Ok.. thanks... so I have to go there first hour the 26th ... I hope everything will be ok... but the hardest will be to get that letter from the school before Monday morning.

If they are in Thailand on the actual Visa, they use both passports when leaving the country. If the are on an Extension of Stay, you have to cancel this Extension of Stay at Immigration Office before they leave, Bring both passports.

They could extend the visa for a year and when they are leaving they could get re-entry visa if they are coming any time soon but if not don't cancel the visa

1. You can show the old passport with new when leaving - Tod or others will confirm this!

2. If you don’t cancel any extension of stay associated with the ED Visa before leaving, then on return to Thailand in the future on any new visa, you could potentially be fined for overstay on the old extension of stay that was not cancelled, up to 20,000 Baht. It won’t stop you from getting new visa in the future, but when you go to extend that visa at immigration, that’s when they may notice you never cancelled you previous extension of stay, and fine you.

Are they on an extension of stay or they have never extended their ED Visa?
