I'm currently on a multiple entry education visa that is good through June if I keep extending it. My current extension expires March 9. I"m getting a job but the company is requesting I leave and come back on a TR visa in order to get the work permit. Do I need to cancel my Education visa before I leave?

TLDR : Answer Summary
The user is currently on a multiple entry education visa set to expire in June with extensions. They plan to switch to a Tourist Visa (TR) for work permit purposes and inquire about the need to cancel their Education visa before leaving the country. Responses clarify that the Education visa must be officially canceled by obtaining a letter from the school and visiting immigration; simply leaving the country will not suffice. The user must ensure they follow the appropriate cancellation process to avoid potential fines when re-entering Thailand.

i'd say whether you 'want' to cancel your current extension or not doesn't really factor into the equation. The way it works is to officially cancel an extension you get a letter from the school stating you're stopping studying and then you go to the immigration office. They'll cancel the extension you're on and give you a stamp saying you can stay until the date on the termination of study letter.

Just leaving the country doesn't cancel the extension officially, and even though you will stamp out, get a new tourist visa, come back into the country when you go to get the in country Non-B and then the extension after that they'll see you failed to correctly cancel your ED visa extension and fine you for it.

Now you have the correct way it should be done, I leave it to you to decide what you're gonna do.

Good Luck

If you keep extending it, it sounds like you have an Extension of Stay, not a visa. You can not get a Work Permit if you have a Tourist Visa. Your employer should apply for the Work Permit using the Work Permit application method 3 and if application is done you take the documents from the ministry of labor and the documents from your employer to apply for the Non Immigrant B visa. Before you leave you cancel your current Extension of Stay based on study at your local Immigration Office.

yes, it’s odd that they haven’t advised him/produced documents for him to apply for a non b.

Yes. You are required to cancel your ed visa before you leave. Please speak to your school and get them to prepare the documents for you to visit the immigration.

If you do not cancel your can be fined for 500 Thb a day overstay from the moment you stopped going to school.

It's free of charge for cancellation at the immigration. Since you will be working here, I believe it's best just to follow through the correct procedures.

if it’s not 100% necessary I don’t want to waste the time and money

Why would you choose not to cancel it ? Anyway, it's a different Queue (N2) from your usual extension of stay (N1) at Chaeng Wattana. The process is pretty fast, I did mine within 1hour.
