Currently on ED visa until the start of Aug. I've got married so I plan to change visa to a Non-O (1year, 5k baht) at Savannakhet.

Since I plan to leave the country before or near to when my visa expires do I still need to officially cancel the ED visa with immigration? 

Any advice welcome, thanks.

YES as you are now on an Ed Visa...

...Be sure to get a letter from your school stating that you have ended your study....

... Have the School state a date certain which gives you time to cancel the Ed Visa with Thai Immigration

...And go to the Thai Immigration office which issued you the Ed Visa STAMP in your passport and cancel the Ed Visa.

... Once the Ed Visa is cancelled, follow your plan for obtaining the One year multiple entry Non O Visa as Married to Thai at Savannakhet Thai Embassy in Laos.

then you can get it from your local Thai Immigration office. ASK them for their list of requirements for the Non O Visa as retiree and the One year extension of stay as retired.
