I am a French citizen looking to stay in Thailand for 60 days instead of the regular 30 days. Do I need to apply online for a tourist visa, which apparently takes 5 weeks, or can I simply go to an office and get it done faster?

TLDR : Answer Summary
As a French citizen, you can enter Thailand visa-exempt for 30 days and extend your stay for an additional 30 days at a local immigration office. While it is possible to extend your stay this way, applying online for a tourist visa for 60 days might be more convenient and cost-effective, allowing you to avoid the need to make an additional trip to the immigration office.

When going to Thailand for 31 - 60 ( 90 )days, the 60 days touristvisa is the best option.

It is cheaper than visa excempt + 30 days extension.

No need of a onward ticket ( 90 days 1 onward ), if returnticket within 60 days.

It is easier to apply from the comfort of your home.

Not wasting holiday time to find, go to and waiting at a immigration office ( 90 you would need that ).

Then no need to leave Thailand in up to 90 days.

France is well known for its slow processing of the evisas. You cannot go to an office to apply you have to apply online.

You can enter with no visa for 30 days and get one 30 day extension at a local immigration office if you don’t want to wait. A bit more expensive than the tourist visa but not much.

As a French citizen you’re entitled to 30 days visa exemption upon arrival which later can be extended with another 30 days at your local immigration in Thailand.

AirAsia refused me with a bus ticket years ago from Singapore to Thailand. After a lot of arguing and showing them links like yours they eventually let me on, but what a headache

I’ve heard about this before, it should be sufficient but maybe a just a cheap onward ticket by plane it’s the best option. The best option is anyway to apply for a tourist visa if you want to stay for 60 days. It’s cheaper and you don’t need to waste time at the immigration in Thailand.

like this but some airlines will need proof you're leaving within 30 days so you'll need a throw away flight for this. Probably easier and cheaper to get a tourist visa if you have the time. Though there's talk of visa prices increasing soon

Your right, some air carrier can demand an onward ticket as they can be responsible for your return if formal requirements isn’t for filled. But a cheap bus ticket should be sufficient.
