What are the best options for French citizens unable to obtain a tourist visa for Thailand?

Good morning,

my friends are coming for 66 days in Koh Samui. They won't be able to get their tourist visa (there's a massive strike in public transport in France at the moment so no way to get to the Thai embassy). I'm trying to help them and find a plan B.

What in your opinion is the best course of action, knowing that there are French citizens, they speak very little English and one of them is sick in a bus so the solution must include airplanes only?

Thank you so much for your help.

TLDR : Answer Summary
French citizens can enter Thailand without a visa for 30 days through visa exempt entry. To extend their stay, they should go to the immigration office upon arrival to apply for a 30-day extension for 1900 baht. They may also need to provide proof of onward travel when boarding their flight. Alternatively, after extending their stay, they could exit and re-enter Thailand to receive a new 30-day entry.

And it appears that helpful posters gave

as much good advice as she's likely to get for their friends pending trip here.

Good Luck, (y)

Keep in mind depending on their airline they might be required to show proof of onward travel (within the 30 days they'll be stamped in for) to board the plane. That's 100% airline specific for people flying in without any thai visa in their passport SO they should check their air carrier BEFORE they show up to check in.

They can certainly make the vacation work, BUT they would have been way further ahead to have applied for a single entry tourist visa from a thai consulate in France BEFORE they wash up here..

Good luck to them

If your friends come and have a return flight for 60 days make sure they have a flight out of Thailand on the 30th day.

If they get a extension and then want to do a border bounce out and back in to Thailand for a 30 days visa exempt.

Nearest place is Ranong .

There are companies on samui who will take you there and back.

There is fb groups on samui who can help you with this.

For your information, if you want to get a visa for Thailand in France you've to ask for an appointment at the Thai embassy, months in advance. And then this appointment can't be changed on last minute. They don't deliver visa by postal mail.

okay, despite the errant terminology (French people showing up without a visa in their passport get in FREE for 30 days on what's called a 30 day visa exempt entry) the advice from Joseph Graham is about the best you'll get.

Have your friends come in on a 30 day visa exempt entry, have the go to the immigration office and extend that entry by 30 more days for 1900baht. Then have them go back to the immigration office and get a 7 day "extension application denied stamp for another 1900baht that gives the a week to get out of the country

OR

after that 30 day extension have them exit/re-enter the country to get a NEW 30 day visa exempt entry

66 day's is to long for that to work.

I'm here for 89 day's as i always leave 1 day early.

Make sure your friends get the dates 100% correct.

Because of the evisa in London i come in on a 30 day's Visa exempt and a ticket to KL on the 30th day i never used it .

But was asked for it at LHA.

Got my 30 days extension and will do a border bounce on the last day of that extension.

Come back in on a visa exempt.

The 7 days stamp is interesting too. Do you know if it would be prejudicial to get a new visa in the future? They come in Thailand every year.

That sounds good. I was not sure it was still possible to get a 30 days exemption + 30 days extension and then another 30 days exemption after exit/re-entry.

AND the 7 day application for extension denied stamp ??

you cannot have 2 extensions with exemption visa !!!

yes. This.

As French National you can be in Thailand for 30 with the arrival stamp. Just need to make sure you schedule a trip and get an extension locally when when you arrive.
