Do I need to apply for a new DTV if I renew my passport with a damaged page?

My passport, which has my DTV linked to it, has a minor tear on the first page right after the bio-data section. This happened when airport staff flipped through the pages roughly. I was able to enter without issue, but I’m concerned the tear might worsen.

If I renew my passport and have the new one sent to Thailand, will I need to apply for a brand-new DTV from the start? Or can I continue to use the old, slightly damaged passport together with the new one until my current DTV expires? I’m aware the visa is tied to the old passport number, which won’t match the reissued passport.

TLDR : Answer Summary
A user is concerned about a minor tear in their passport that has their DTV linked to it. They ask if renewing their passport will require a brand-new DTV or if they can use both the old and new passports until the DTV expires. Comments suggest that having both passports, possibly with a printed DTV, will suffice. Additionally, some mention that minor damage is acceptable as long as the passport is readable. Other users have had their DTV details transferred to new passports without needing to apply again.

Put some tape on it, so the page doesn't come off completely.

A damaged page isn't an issue, as long as what's on it is readable.

I was told this Is the worst thing to do, as it can be seen as your passport has been tampered with which can be seen as even worse than the original tear. The unfortunate thing is that it's right opposite the bio-data page, so when the IO opens the passport to scan, it's right there.

making sure the page doesn't come off isn't tampering. If the page is entirely off and you tape it back on, then you have an issue.

I have just got a new passport

My local immigration transferred all the details of my dtv in to my new passport

So no need to carry two passports

How'd the process work for that? Could I just head to the Immigration Division 1 and then ask for my DTV to be transferred? Did they issue you a new version of the PDF evisa? Or, do you have one of the older versions of the visa that was a 1 page sticker in the passport?

Go to immigration with your old and new passport

It took 30 mins while they transferred the details in to the passport

Your dtv will not change as it was issued in your old passport number

Immigration already have that information logged

You are correct, as the DTV is attached to your old passport. If your new passport has a different number, then carry both passports until you have time to attend immigration and have it transferred.

Do you know if it's possible to transfer the DTV issued by evisa, and have it updated for a newly issued passport? I read that was not possible but it's difficult to find official information on the exact processes.

They won't transfer visas issued abroad.

As long as cover and bio data page are fine, it shouldn’t be an issue

Anonymous participant 361 I heard it can be quite problematic for some countries -- say if I were to head to Vietnam or Indonesia, they're more particular on the passport being in perfect condition to ensure it hasn't been tampered with.

The visa is tied to your biometrics not the passport. That’s why when you activate by coming into Thailand all your metrics are stored under your current DTV.

and with a print out of the DTV visa received from the Thai Embassy or Consulate will serve as PROOF of your DTV Visa for 5 years.

This Family laminated their DTV visas... for easily showing to airline check in Staff and Thai Immigration Officers upon arrival into Thailand.

Thank you, I thought this was the case but couldn't find it listed officially anywhere, but hope it works.

To confirm, this would work for both my existing stamp Thailand exit, and then again re-entering for a new DTV stamp in the new passport?

I guess I will have to travel with two passports for the next 5 years! 😃

Your old passport is invalid once the new one is issued, it's only purpose now is to confirm the same passport number the visa was originally issued to is yours. All stamps will be in the new valid passport. Printout a copy of your DTV as well for the passport control officer.
