TLDR : Answer Summary
The best way to obtain a visa for a 6-month stay in Thailand varies based on individual circumstances. A Multi-entry Tourist Visa, which allows a total of 180 days of stay by combining initial entry and extensions, is often recommended. However, individuals can also enter on a single-entry Tourist Visa for 60 days, extendable for an additional 30 days, and then do border runs for further extensions. It's crucial to check with the local Royal Thai Embassy for specific requirements and options available.

I think they are trying to compete with Vietnam who have eased visa restrictions. Very easy to stay there for 3 mths now. I don't think Thailand making any real changes very soon.

They might do it, but it will take a long time. Don't expect this to happen anytime in the foreseeable future

I am here on a tourist multi visit visa which gives me 6 months. I get 60 days which I can extend by 30 days so 90 in total and then can do a border bounce and then another 60 days extended by 30 so a second 90 days.

if you do a final border bounce right before your visa expires you can get a final 60+30

The only way to get a visa is to apply at a Thai embassy. For 6 months either get a standard 60 day tourist visa & extend by 30 days, then go visit another Thai embassy in a nearby country and repeat (takes a few days), or apply for a multi entry tourist visa which will cover your 6 months with 2 extensions and a quick border trip in the middle

Also, if you plan on visiting nearby countries, you could maybe combine the 60 day visa plus 30 day extension with one or 2 visa exempt 30 days plus the 30 day extensions.

Why are you coming for 6 months? Tourist, family reasons, work etc? Once you state reasons people can advise you. Is it only for 6 months or are you looking to stay longer?

for the border runs, I recommend using a "visa run company" as they "grease the wheels" at the borders and guarantee your entry.

. . . .if you don't qualify for the multi entry 6-months Tourist Visa, then the other option is applying for the single entry 60-Days Tourist Visa. You will get stamped in for 60 days, then extend on immigration for 1900.- THB fee for extra 30 days. Before the 90 days are over, do a "border run", re-enter Thailand visa exempt. You will get stamped in for 30 days, which you can, too, extend once for 30 more days. Then do a second border run and re-entry, receive 30 days again. So your total can be maxxed out at 60+30+30+30+30 = 180 days = 6 months stay

this way you have to keep changing your retour ticket and pay penalty to the airline each time..right??

@Sergio ****
highly unlikely that the airline is going to ask you for the onward travel proof when you hold a visa. They mostly ask people who want to enter Thailand visa-exempt

Financial evidence, e.g. bank statements, proof of earnings, sponsorship letter (current balance not less than 200,000 THB for the past 6 months).

- Your recent official UK/Ireland bank statement shows your name, address, and a minimum closing balance of £5,000 (Do not send the screenshot) , proof of earnings (payslips) or sponsorship letter from your sponsor with official ID and their Bank Statements.

Go to any foreign country without a plan where a tourist visa is 30 days and plan on staying for 6 months ... when u get caught you will pay a hefty fine and will get blacklisted and won't be able to come back for many years ...

Sounds like a Multi-entry Tourist Visa which gives you almost 9 months is best for you. With two in country extensions and one border bounce you'll get your 6 months. Check your local Royal Thai Embassy or Consulate website for details/requirements and how to apply.
