Do I need a re-entry permit for Thailand if I'm traveling abroad on a Retirement extension?

I am in Thailand on a Retirement extension of a Non Immigrant Spouse visa. Renewal date is 15 July 2021. I want to go to Scotland for three months mid June until mid September. Do I need to get a re-entry permit and if so what happens on my return. Can I apply again for an extension in September or do I have to get another visa in Scotland and start the whole process again.

Final thought, could I renew the extension before I leave in mid June which would be a month before renewal date?

I apologise in advance for my ignorance of the system but there seems to be so many different rules in Thailand.

TLDR : Answer Summary
The user, on a Retirement extension of a Non Immigrant Spouse visa, is inquiring about the need for a re-entry permit for a planned trip to Scotland from mid-June to mid-September and the implications for their visa status upon return. Comments suggest that a re-entry permit is necessary to maintain the extension while abroad, and that the user may be able to renew their extension before leaving if permitted by their local immigration office. However, if departing without renewing, they would need to apply for a new visa upon returning to Thailand.

If you can have a fixed flight ticket that shows exactly when you are out of Thailand, go to talk to your immigration office if they can let you apply earlier. Some immigration offices let you apply early if you prove you are not in Thailand when the current extension due. So an open ticket wouldn't work for this.

You'd be sensible to delay your June departure long enough to ensure you can renew your extension before going to Scotland and get a reentry permit at that time

if I could have delayed my departure I would not have bothered asking the question in the first place.

ah well. Most places are 30 days before to renew extension, you may be lucky where you are as a few do 45 days. But if you can't renew before departure you will need to start over

Apply for a new extension, and buy a re-entry permit, Go to Scotland, come back on the re-entry permit, go through whatever quarantine procedures are in place then. Job done.

thank you. If I apply early would the next extension be from that date for 12 months or would the original

, does not seem realistic. Whenever you apply for an extension, they will add it to your current admitted-to-stay date (or a little later) and ask you to come and get it while you are not in Thailand. So when you return to Thailand you do not have a valid visa any longer. Then you will have to apply for a new extension. In theory, you can get an extension based on any legal stay in Thailand if you meet all other requirements. However, I would ask my local immigration about how to do this most easily. If they give you some "attractive" advice, then make sure to get it in writing as such "favour" most likely will be officer-of-the-day-granted...

as I expected, conflicting information from different people.

The confusion continues 😒😒

, I don't really think the information is conflicting. It is more about your situation is a little complex. Ask your local immigration.

probably best to ask Immigration if I can find an English speaker to understand my query.

@Jim ******
, most/all immigrations have officers speaking well English...

Your new extension of stay would add the time to your existing extension of stay

> Do I need to get a re-entry permit

Sadly, a re-entry permit keeps your current extension of stay or admitted to stamp "alive" when you leave Thailand. It does not extend those dates.

>or do I have to get another visa in Scotland and start the whole process again

Yes, you will have to restart the process

>which would be a month before renewal date?

That *might* work. At some immigration offices, you can apply 45 days before your current extension of stay expires. If they let you apply before your extension of stay expires, you can get a new extension of stay, and a re-entry permit.
