What should I know about applying for a Thai Family Visa extension and re-entry permits?

Hi. Applying for annual extension of Thai Family (spouse) on June 6 for a July 20 expiration date I was stamped under consideration and told to return with passport August 19. If I need to travel outside country I was told just return before 19th and get a reentry permit. Does this sound correct? I was hoping to move the expiration date forward by going 45 days before the expiry but they said expiration date stays the same and 30 day under consideration effectively starts July 20, which is why I go in for the extension stamp on August 19.

TLDR : Answer Summary
The user is applying for an annual extension of their Thai Family (spouse) visa and has been told that the expiration date will remain the same despite applying early. They seek confirmation regarding travel outside Thailand and the process of obtaining a re-entry permit, which must be done before leaving the country, and that they must return before the expiration of their current stamp under consideration.

You aren't gonna move the date a bit now,

AND

if you don't make it back IN to the country before that Aug 19th under consideration stamp come up, you're done, and will start all over (which will give you a chance to "move the date" though ๐Ÿ˜‰ )

You got NO leeway on that date, you show up the day that stamp runs out, and they ink in the year extension.

Miss it and you're back to square one and start over. <- or that's what happens when people are OUTSIDE thailand if they can't get back in by that under consideration stamp date.

thank you Tod. So arrive as a tourist and do 90 day Non O for Thai Family then annual extension after 45 days. Great, thanks for all the advice.

Yep
@Tour *******
, that's what you'd do if you didn't make it back before the current under consideration stamp runs out ๐Ÿ˜•

Sounds like totally normal. A 1-year extension with the same reason is always added to your current stamp, regardless of how early you apply for a new one. If you want to change the application timing, you need to do the process from scratch again.

When you travel outside Thailand, you need to get a re-entry permit before you fly out. Remember, a re-entry permit has the same expiry date as your current under-consideration stamp.

thank you Ellie, if I don't make it back in time for my year extension stamp on 19th August (if a flight gets delayed or cancelled, for example) then have to enter on 30 day waiver, does Chiang Mai immigration let me apply again right away for a yearly Family (Spouse) extension if I immediately get bank letter, photos etc. right away and apply within those 30 days? No penalties for missing the first stamp other than losing that 1900 baht?

No.

IF you enter on visa-exempt or visa-waiver for 30 days (meaning you enter Thailand as a tourist), it is totally different type of entry and it is NOT eligible for ANY type of 1-year extensions.

If you enter Thailand on tourist status, you have to start with applying for in-country initial Non-O visa for 90 day by meeting the requirements, then apply for 1-year extension once your stay is less than 45 days.

IF you are staying in Thailand and being delayed applying for a 1-year extension (meaning you are on overstay) for a few days, You MIGHT be allowed to apply for a 1-year extension based on being married to a Thai after paying the fine for overstay.

@Ellie ******
initial Non O requirements for Thai Family would be like usual extension requirements? 400k for 2 months and bank letter, marriage certificate copy etc.?

@Tour *******
No seasoning requirement of funds for initial Non-O visa. Get the latest requirement handout (immigration office specific) at the Chiang Mai office just before you apply for one.

Here is GENERAL information for initial Non-O. Chiang Mai requires you to have more than 21days remaining with the current stamp
