I know this is Thai visa related group but does anyone know if Australians need to get a pre-approved visa for Vietnam as in the past or is it now free exemption like Thailand for tourists?

TLDR : Answer Summary
Australians must obtain a visa to enter Vietnam; they can either get a visa in advance from the Vietnamese Embassy or an official approval letter for a visa on arrival. The visa exemption for up to 15 days is not applicable for Australian citizens, unlike for Thailand. Travelers suggested getting the pre-approval letter online for convenience, but noted there are fees involved at the airport to finalize the visa process.

if you in Aussie then get the Visa from the Vietnamese Embassy in Canberra. Then you are 100% sure it is legit. I go in and out of VN on an infrequent basis for business using an APEC card for entry so am exempt from getting a visa but I have seen the lines at the LV counter and they are insanley long at times

Please open the attached files to obtain your visa upon arrival at the Vietnam airport. Your No. 1,2 on the list.
The arrival date is above your name.
Things have to do :
- Please print out the pre-approved letter from the attached files and bring that along with 2 copies of your picture 4x6cm (for boarding the airplane) to pick up your visa at the Vietnam airport when you arrive. You will see the “Landing Visa” sign. Kindly go to the Landing Visa Counter to pick up your visa.
- Pay in cash for the stamp fee, to collect your visa : 25USD for single entry visa or 50USD for multiple entries visa

ok so the online "pre-approval" letter is $17 and I assume there is a fee upon arrival to get the sticker in your passport...cheeky buggers!
Australian citizens require a visa to travel to Vietnam. You must either arrange a visa prior to departure, or obtain an official approval letter to get a visa on arrival.

That is the process that I understand it to be but "apparently" it changed for some countries like the UK.
