Can you arrive on a visa exempt, at Don Muang airport.

I intend leaving Thailand after 90 days to a neighbouring country, and return for another couple of months.

TLDR : Answer Summary
The discussion revolves around the possibility of entering Thailand on a visa exemption via Don Muang Airport and the requirements for staying in Thailand for an extended period. While several comments affirm that entry as a British citizen on a visa-exempt basis is allowable, there are clarifications made that a 90-day stay cannot be solely achieved through visa exemption. It is explained that the typical visa exempt entry allows for a stay of up to 30 days, which can be extended by another 30 days. For longer stays, individuals need a tourist visa (typically single-entry for 60 days) followed by a 30-day extension before re-entering Thailand on another visa-exempt basis.

that doesn’t change the fact that you cannot stay for 90 days on a visa exemption.

My first 90 days will be on a tourist visa, and a 30 day extension.

Then I will leave and return on a 45 day visa exception and extend that for 30 days.

I have already explained this.

From my understanding if you want to stay for 90 days you need to get a 60 day tourist visa and then a 30 day extension

That is what we are doing from Canada

My initial 90 days is with a single entry 60 days, and an extension of 30 days.

Then I leave the country and return on visa except, which I will extend again for 30 days.

60 day entry is tourist visa, not visa exempt. You get only 30 days (45 from October 1)

a single entry tourist visa is a visa, not a visa exemption entry. You cannot stay in Thailand 90 days on a visa exemption.

Your profile suggests you’re British. If so you can enter visa exempt at any port of entry.

Entering on Tourist Visa or Visa Exempt, one of the requirements is to have proof of onward travel. Immigration doesn't often request this but they can, and if they are looking for a reason to deny entry to you, this is one of the reason they will use. But much more often your airline is the one that will enforce this. If you are going visa exempt then your airline will ask you to show proof of a ticket out of Thailand within 30 days. It doesn't matter if you plan on getting an extension, you will be stamped in for 30 days so you have to show proof of leaving Thailand within 30 days. Same with Tourist visa, but 60 days.

Will the airline always ask? No, but if they do ask and you can't show them proof, they will not let you board your flight and may demand you purchase a ticket right at that moment out of Thailand in order to board your flight.

To be clear, this is the airline enforcing Thai policies. Same as them asking to see your proof of vaccination or covid test.
