Hello everyone,

Im in Savannakhet right now. Im going to apply for a non-o visa tomorrow.

I have everything prepared but I have a question. I have 2 passports and they have different numbers (both are Czech passports though). My initial thought was that I will exit Thailand with my old passport because my old non-o visa expires in 3 weeks and passport is also almost full (3 pages left). Then I would enter Laos with new passport that is empty (make visa on arrival). Well I was wrong, the immigration officer forced me to enter Laos on my old passport. He said I cannot change passports.

My question is, can still apply for Thai visa tomorrow in the embassy with my new passport or I have to apply with old one ? Because the Laos stamp is in the old one.

Thank you for helping me.

TLDR : Answer Summary
The user is seeking advice on applying for a Thai non-O visa at the embassy using a new passport after entering Laos on an old passport. Concerns include whether to apply with the old passport due to an existing visa stamp, and the implications of traveling between countries with different passport numbers.

I don’t understand how you can have 2 live passports from the same country, surely the old one was cancelled when the new one was issued? In which case trying to travel on it will be a problem.

Well at least that is the case in the UK.

I don't know about other countries but the US used to issue 2 passports to someone in the event you need to enter Israel but also need to enter some middle eastern countries that wouldn't allow you to enter with an Israeli stamp in your passport.

I didn’t know that, as far as I know. UK does not.

It seems your best bet would be to get the thai visa in the old passport then after returning to thailand go to immigration to have it swapped to the new passport. Or if what the other comments mention that you can only swap passports if traveling by air and not land then only have the new thai visa put in your new passport if you make plans to fly back to thailand.

You need to get your visa extension transferred to your new passport at immigration in Thailand. I'm not sure if an embassy/Consulate can do it.

I dont have visa extension i have only multiple entry non-o visa. No extension of that visa

you need to get it transferred to your new passport

As I understand it you can't change passports by land. You have to enter Laos on the one you use to leave Thailand and have to leave Laos and enter Thailand on that same passport. You can only swap passports if travelling by air

a good question. The passport with which you are supposed to apply for a Non-Imm-O visa at the Savannakhet Consulate must still have a validity of 6 months or 180 days. You are lucky if your old passport still good for that, because your previous visa is in their system and they will see it. They could ask you why you hadn't transferred the stay permit from the old to the new passport, while you were still in Thailand. Bevause THIS IS what you are supposed to do on Immigration as soon as you have picked up a new passport . . . . . Yet, if the numbers of both passports are the same, I would actually try to use the new passport (and no questions asked) and see what they will do

both of my passports are valid. Just one of them is running out of pages but I can still use it until it expires in 8 years

@Tomáš ********
well it leaves me speechless. when my passport is running out of pages, I will need a new passport, and when I pick the new passport up, the old one gets punched and marked "invalid". That's how it works in most countries. There is nothing such as "two valid passports at the same time". And there's a reason why it is handled this way. You are already experiencing the pitfalls of this incredibly stupid behaviour of your country's passport issuing authorities. Well, maybe a well-meaning officer at the Savannakhet Consulate will have mercy with you

Well thanks for yout wonderful input. Having two passports at the same is actually beneficial and until now I never had a problem.

If I would flown into Laos I could enter with the new passport. Just land borders have this rule and I was not aware of it.

I wish you well, have a good trip and I hope there will be a solution in the waiting for your "two passports" adventure

Agreed to Andreas, my old passport has written CANCELLED and can't use it anymore except to move my old alive visa to a new one, If I were you, I won't take any risk to confuse Thai Immigration by using two passport any chance. Since it's not Europe, you better go with unique one bro

I can have 2 passport with different numbers at the same time. My country allow me to do this and I did like this in the past in Europe. I used one passport to apply visas and other one to travel out of EU

@Stelar ******
yeah, that's what I thought - he should have visited Immigration while he still was in Thailand, and had the stay permit stamp transferred from the old to the new passport., in order to be able to use the new passport for exiting Thailand AND entering Laos

his mbassy why didnt cancel his passport i dont understand

I have no idea, normally your old passport gets invalidated when you pick up the new passport. You but keep the old passport, enter Thailand with the new one, and then have all valid Thai stamps transferred from the old to the new passport. Same applies when you pick up the new passport on the Embassy of your home country in Bangkok.

I would speak to the staff when you are submitting tomorrow only they can tell.

I would fill out paperwork and copies for both though.
