Can the DTV visa holder stay in Thailand for more than 180 days per year?

Can someone confirm this for me?

With the DTV visa, the maximum stay is 180 days per year, right?

And even though you can extend every 90 days (or exit and re-enter), the total annual limit is still only 180 days?

I just want to make sure that the DTV does NOT allow staying in Thailand for more than 6 months per year.

TLDR : Answer Summary
The DTV visa allows for a maximum stay of 180 days per entry, and there is no official annual limit on how many days a holder can stay in Thailand. While holders must report their location every 90 days, they can leave and re-enter Thailand to obtain new 180-day entry stamps, allowing for extended stays beyond 180 days in a calendar year.

How much trouble have folks had becoming tax residents on the DTV, I.e. getting a TIN, certificate and filing taxes? With major issues opening a bank account on a glorified tourist visa, there's likely issues on the willingness to hand out residency proof such as tax certificates and TINs

No this is not correct. There is no limit to the number of days you can stay in Thailand per year. There are multiple topics to consider.

1) length of visa - 5 year validity

2) entry stamp - this tells you how long you can stay each time you enter. 180 days each time.

3) there is no rule regarding how many days you can stay per year. Nor is there a rule regarding how many times you can leave or enter.

4) there is a separate and distinct responsibility to report your location to immigration at 90 days. This is completely separate than the visa, length of stay, etc

The DTV allows for up to 180 days per entry. You can leave and come back and get another 180 day entry stamp each time.

With this, unser the current rules, you can stay basically in Thailand for 5 years with short trips out of the country occasionally to get a new entry stamp

How did you get a visa in the first place if you can’t work out what the rules are

Oh, thank you very much. I haven’t studied the tax regulations yet.

If I become subject to tax, would I be required to pay in both countries the country where I work and also in Thailand?

Bebbieluu depending on what assessable income you bring into Thailand you will need to file and pay any Thai tax due. If the country where you otherwise pay tax has a dual tax agreement with Thailand you can claim a credit for any tax already paid on that income against Thai tax as part of the process

Bebbieluu dont worry too much about the tax

No, you can enter, exit and reenter freely. You definitely can stay almost the whole year if you want. I started 2025 in Thailand, and here I am still.

That’s really helpful. I’m currently on an ED visa, and I’m planning to apply for a DTV, so I wanted to gather some information first. Thank you so much kaa

Instead of being negative why not give some constructive advice.

What I've done a few times now,

Enter thailand, report 90 days at immigration, leave thailand at 179 days, to avoid a second 90 day report,

Reenter thailand, report at 90 days,

When you leave Thailand, how long do you normally stay abroad before returning?

And regarding the country you choose to exit to, do you have any recommendations? Or is any country acceptable?
Chris ***********
Bebbieluu we are in hua hin, our closest and easiest is down to ranong and cross over into myanmar, all in one day

You don’t extend at 90 days , you do immigration reporting every 90 days just like all people stay over 90 days. Can extend for another 180 days. After which you can leave and reenter for another 180 days. Most people just leave and reenter after 180 days .

Alternatively, come and go as you please and receive 180 days each entry

what does the 90 day reporting entails btw? Do they need to see documents such as bank statements etc or is it a simple check in?

You can stay more than 180 days in a year as many do. You can stay a max of 180 days without extending. You extend via an IO or a border hop which is the most popular way
Kyle *******
You can extend for another 6 months to stay in Thailand for a year then you have to leave an come back

@Kyle ******
That’s the theory. In practice it’s almost impossible to do and for most way easier to leave and return for a fresh 180 day stamp.
