My wife has an Extension until November 2019, piggy-backing on mine. Her Lao passport is almost full. If she gets a new passport in Laos, does she then just show both her old passport with her Extension stamp and Re-entry permit, and her unused new passport, at the airport in BKK? Then get the stamp/permit transferred at Chaengwattana?

TLDR : Answer Summary
If your wife obtains a new passport in Laos, she can show both her old passport containing the Extension stamp and Re-entry permit, as well as the new passport when arriving at Bangkok airport. It is advisable to transfer the stamps and permits at Chaengwattana in a timely manner. The transfer service is free, although the Laos government may handle invalidated passports differently.

I don't know how Laos government handle your invalidated passport, some countries punch holes once it is no longer validate (some do on ID pages only, some do whole passport). In that case better to make sure they wouldn't punch on your stamp page/part...

Yes, that's a worry. My wife can't remember if they even give the old passport back, but I think they must do.

Yes, that is correct. She should do the stamps/pemit transfer in a timely manner although there is no written timeline. The transfer service is free. When you get a new passport in Thailand at least from the US Embassy they will give you a letter to give Immigration when having the stamps/permits transferred, I doubt she would get that letter in Laos, but I don't think it will be a problem.

Actually when I had my stamps transferred at Chaengwattana I had the letter from the US Embassy but they didn't even ask for it. That was almost two years ago now though.

No need that kind of letter if you get new passport from your country. I just read similar report here in this group a short while ago.

Thanks. Yes, you get an Embassy letter if you renew a UK passport in Thailand but if you do it in the U.K. you don't. She won't get a letter in Laos, but hopefully that won't be an issue.
