I plan to arrive without a visa (30 days) then go through the process to get the one year Retirement visa again, I had it a few years ago and have enough money in my Thai bank etc. so none of that is a problem. As I understand it, at first I get the three month, then change that to the one year, and to travel thereafter I would also need to get a re-entry visa. If all that is still correct, am I right in thinking that during the 3 months before getting the one year, I would not be able to leave Thailand. I know I can apply for the one year before the end of the three months.
Answer summary
The process of obtaining a Retirement visa in Thailand can be initiated upon arrival on a 30-day exemption, followed by an application for the 90-day Non-O visa. While it is possible to travel during the 90 days with a re-entry permit, it's crucial to ensure all paperwork is prepared for the one-year extension before leaving. It is generally more straightforward to apply for the Non-O visa from your home country to avoid potential complications.

Strange way to do it I think. Get the Non-O before you arrive and then apply for 12 month extension.

Jack Stone . . and don't forget, if you apply for the "change of visa type" from the exempt entry to the initial 90-days Non-O Visa, it costs 2000 THB, and most Immigrations not only want to see a proof that the +800,000 THB deposit had been transferred to your Thai bank account from abroad, they also want to see a rental contract. If you enter on a 90-days Non-Imm-O Visa you obtained from outside of Thailand, you don't need that proof for the deposit for the application to the 1-year extension of the stay permit based on retirement

It would be so much easier to apply for the 90 day Non-O visa before you travel to Thailand, unless you enjoy spending time inside immigration offices. Also bear in mind that a small number of immigration offices are simply not able to issue an in country Non-O visa.

If you wish to proceed and the immigration office that serves where you will live can do it you must have 15 or 21 days left on your entry stamp in order to apply (you can get the 30 day extension if you need it) and once your application is completed you can't leave the country until you have the 90 day Non-O visa in your passport. Once you have that visa you can get a re-entry permit and leave if you wish but must be back in time to apply for the 12 month extension of stay, make sure you leave plenty of time to gather all the paperwork required. Once you have the 12 month extension of stay you will need a new re-entry permit if you wish to leave and return again

The 12 months extension is not a visa but a temporary stay in the kingdom you need apply for, there is not such as a reentry visa either, it is a reentry permit you buy after your temporary extension is granted, cost you 1000 baht for single entry and 3800 baht for a multiple entry, Better apply for the Non O from your home country.

If you want to get a Non-O retirement Visa the correct & cheapest way

Apply for the Non-O outside Thailand ( from your home country ) on the Thai Embassy website

Once approved you can come here & have 90 days to fulfill the requirements for the 12 month extension!!
