TLDR : Answer Summary
When holding a Non-O retirement extension and acquiring a re-entry permit, you can spend time outside Thailand as long as you return before your extension of stay expires. The re-entry permit keeps your visa status active, but if you do not return before the extension expires, you will need to reapply for a new visa.

don't you need 30 days or so for a new extension?

no, an extension of stay can be acquired at the last day

@Benjamin *****
agreed but can you enter Thailand 2 days before expiry?

Years ago when I did they gave me 30d tourist stamp.

a re-entry permit keeps your extension of stay “alive”, and you will not be granted “30 days” to stay in Thailand. You will be able to stay up to your “admitted to” date on your existing extension of stay

Other than CoE requirements etc, re-entry permit and extension doesn't have that king of limitation.

Technically, you can enter the last day of extension and would get the stamp only one day (on that day).

If you're out of the country and the extension expires you're done and you start the whole process all over

Thought one has to have a return date and has this procedure changed.

Obviously I am wrong please confirm. Oh he is talking about at the airport if at Immigration one has to state a return date or am I wrong?

@John *****
you're talking about the FORM you fill out that lists a return date. Just make something up, they don't care at all

@John *****
You do not need a return date for a re-entry permit.

@John *****
, you are wrong.

As long as you're back before your current extension expires you can come back on that stamp with a re-entry permit

Your re-entry permit is valid to the date of your extension of stay based on retirement.
