TLDR : Answer Summary
The original poster, a UK citizen, seeks advice on traveling with an Emergency Travel Document (ETD) due to their full passport. They want to know if they can obtain a Tourist Visa by traveling to Laos or another nearby country briefly. Advice from the community suggests that ETDs are primarily for returning home, and that travel to other countries may require careful planning to ensure there is enough space for entry stamps. Options like Malaysia or Singapore are recommended for brief trips, as these may only require simple entry stamps rather than full visa pages.

Greg like Jody says you just need to go to a country that stamps rather than needs full page visa stickers. A stamp is only

of a passport page and most countries immigration will put them anywhere that they will fit. Malaysia is a good choice. Myanmar is also just 2 stamps if you are doing a land border bounce

If you were REALLY full to the point you didn't have room at all, or only for the Thai exit and return, Hong Kong does not stamp at all.

3 half pages you could stretch out for a long time, you just need to avoid full visa stamps. Even Cambodia with the eVisa is an option if you have a half page.

Greg Myanmar is $10 for a LAND border bounce, it doesn't involve a visa. Depends where you are and if you have used your two land visa exempt entries yet this year as to whether it makes sense.

I have 3 half pages left ..in looking at Singapore or Malaysia - I’m told they both just give you a stamp

Myanmar ask for $85 in entry

Why will your passport renewal take longer than normal? renewing in Bangkok can usually be done in less than 3 weeks, sometimes it's as quick as 10 days. You keep your old passport while they're processing the new one so you can still get Extensions in country, although you're not supposed to be able to travel overseas on it.

you would think that there would be a process that expedites your new passport for a fee and that they could do it within 60 days. Malaysia or Singapore are options for just a stamp. KL likely the cheapest run (and you don’t even have to spend the night, just give yourself two hours there so you aren’t rushing as you usually have to take the train between terminals to get to customs and then take the train back to the terminal you would fly back out of)

.. now that might work .. a night in Malaysia , back to Thailand , 30 days + 30 day extension .. that might be enough time

Fly to Malaysia and you only get a stamp. They can fit it in to an empty spot. Buys you some time to get your new passport?

ETDs are issued by the consular section of the British Embassy, not VFS Trendy building.

You have to discuss this at the Trendy House when you get your Emergency Travel Document. This Document is meant to give you the opportunity to travel back to your home country, not for travelling around Asia.
