Will my frequent tourist visits to Thailand raise concerns at immigration?

I’ve got tickets booked to arrive in Thailand next week. This will be my fourth visit for the year. Others being in March, June and October. Each visit, I stay for 3 weeks. Genuine tourist. Have return flight back to Australia paid for. Accomodation booked. Enough cash to pass the 20,000 baht test. Have I got anything to be concerned about? As in, entry refusal?
Answer summary
The user has concerns about potential entry denial to Thailand on their upcoming trip, given their frequent travel patterns (four visits within a year) and the current tightening of immigration rules. Many commenters reassure them that as long as they maintain proof of their tourist status—such as a return ticket, accommodation bookings, and sufficient funds (20,000 baht)—they should be fine. However, some caution about increased scrutiny for frequent entrants. Overall, experiences vary, and while some have faced no issues, others note the possibility of being questioned by immigration. Seeking a tourist visa may be considered for added security.

Although you have 3 entries your total days are only 63 so way under the 157 guideline. The 2 times entry per year unless you can convince the IO you are a genuine tourist, which I think you can do.

To be very honest, I would really ask. What are you doing in Thailand??? even I am not an immigration officer at all, I would suspect this. how old are you? Why so often do you come to Thailand? Do you have a job? which job? What company? Your company gives so many free holidays for you???how do you have financial support? your savings? or from your salary? how much it is? from your parents? I also have a lot of questions to you although i am not immigration officer at all.😂

It’s up to the IO really. But looking at your travel pattern and they will also check your travel history, you’ll most likely fine. They’re actually looking for those in and outs with a bunch of extensions/border runs from a nearby country without going back home.

I flew in to suvarnabhumi yesterday and was pulled at immigration and took for questioning! I had been there dec 2024/ Jan 2025, may/ Jun and 16 nights in oct total 108 nights . I came yesterday for 6 weeks was asked how many times have I been this year and took took for questioning as was many others . Showed return flight , hotel booking (a months worth) and my £2k. And was told basically to get a proper visa next time I return. You will get in fine but may get the same questioning as me . Hope that helps and enjoy your stay.

when visiting in June, 2025. The IO asked me to provide evidence of return flight details to Australia and accommodation booking, in Thailand.

He pondered for a while, then said, I was good to go. So, off I went. He then called me back. Saying, I’d forgotten to take my passport, which he was holding in his hand. I’ve been into Thailand 3x since June and I’ll be arriving again next week, zero concerns. Again never asked a single question in 20+ years.

I often don’t have an onwards ticket because my work in Oz is in multiple States, and usually I fly back to the State that next needs to see me and that’s sorted a week or two before I fly there, so I can’t book the onward ticket until then.

I’ve considered what I’d do if they ever pushed me on that but at this point I’d just explain it. I mean most countries have that rule for tourists but I’ve never actually been asked in any country.

Well it must be true given you read it from “somebody”. Are you 12?

I’ve had between 4 and 11 visa exempt entries virtually every year since 2004. I’ve never been asked for any of those things in that 20+ year period. I guess I’m just lucky? Or maybe that fact that I’m clearly a tourist who returns to his own country in between, isn’t living in Thailand without a proper visa and has never done a border run means I don’t get flagged?
Greg ***********
Greg ***********

you CAN get asked . . . the more visa-exempt entries you have accumulated within a year's period, the higher the chance that you will get asked

OP
Since my initial post, I’ve done a bit of internet research. I found the below article. The biggest drama seems to be entering the country more than twice, in one year? Some legal advise says no problem. If a genuine tourist, enter as many times as you want, by air. Other legal opinion, only allowed entry twice per year, period. I think, to play it safe, I’m going to apply for the 3 month tourist visa? It’s probably too late now and won’t be processed before I fly. However, it’s something in my arsenal, if I some how fall foul of an over zealous IO? 🤔
Andrew *******
Andrew *******
@Nick ********
There is no 2x limit.

There is a likelihood of further enquiry if you enter by land or sea more than twice because they are looking at border runs.

The biggest complaint nowadays seems to be about those who arrive “visa exempt“. I.e. you didn’t purchase a visa from the Thai Embassy in Australia. You are just coming in as a tourist without a visa. I’ve seen issues where someone was declined entry into Thailand, and was told by the immigration officer that a person is only allowed 2 “visa exempt”entries per year. So possibly the question is, did you enter “visa exempt”the other times.? Fwiw, nobody has been able to spot this particular rule.

Of course there are people who get in easily after November 2025, but many do not. In such cases it is important to understand why and then the practice that is being followed is more important than ever to understand.

I'm traveling down there myself in January and don't want to bring cash with me for the simple reason that they can't exchange my currency down there anymore. So I'm traveling like anywhere else in the world with enough funds to stay there until I die via my bank and credit card. What other reasonable choices would I have??

OP
@Jarle ******
there are people on this thread, commenting they’ve entered Thailand since the upgrade of policing visa rules, post November 2025. These people are in exactly the same situation as myself.

This is AI’s interpretation……

“Thailand's 2025 visa rules focus on curbing visa runs, limiting visa-exempt entries to twice yearly for land borders, implementing the mandatory Thailand Digital Arrival Card (TDAC), expanding the global e-Visa system, and tightening scrutiny on frequent short entries, especially by land, to encourage proper visas for long stays. Key changes include the TDAC (mandatory since May 1, 2025), limiting visa-exempt entries (two per year for land), and increased scrutiny for repeated visa-exempt entries within a short period, impacting long-term visitors relying on border hops”.

If you scroll to most recent comments. I commented again, on this thread and my feelings.

nice qualifier :) You posted 2 visa exemptions without any qualifier. You didn’t correct that until called out on it.

Yes, if you do 2 border visa exempts at the max + an extension then you’ll have some extra scrutiny. If you do similar and use an airport instead of land/sea you may also get some extra scrutiny. But that’s not what this topic is about, it’s a dude flying in for what is clearly a holiday after a series of relatively short stay holidays with long gaps in his home country in between. This is not a breach of any current rule and is not the target of this “crackdown”. 🤷🏻‍♂️
