I know that it's now possible to switch from a TR visa to an ED visa while in Thailand.

Can I switch to an ED visa if I am on a covid extension? Am I still considered to have a TR visa if I have been given a covid extension?

TLDR : Answer Summary
The original poster (OP) inquired about switching from a TR visa with a covid extension to an ED visa in Thailand. The consensus from comments suggests it's possible to apply for an ED visa while on a covid extension, as long as the entry stamp relates to a qualifying visa. However, it was emphasized that there are specific timeframes (minimum days remaining on the current extension) and documentation requirements from schools that need to be met. Engaging directly with the relevant school and understanding the timelines is recommended.

In Bangkok you need a MINIMUM of 15 days left on your current stamp to apply for an in country ED visa at the immigration office, (in Chiang Mai you need 21 days)

Schools are taking about 3 weeks now to get the paperwork from the MOE that you need to go apply for the Non-ED in country so you're going to need a minimum of about 6 weeks total to pull off getting an ED visa issued in Bangkok.

What that means is you aren't gonna do it with the time you have now seeing as you'd have to apply by the 14th of Jan for an ED visa in Bangkok and I don't know any school that can get the MOE documentation that quickly.

There's no need to go ask the immigration office anything.

You CAN apply for an in country ED visa from a covid extension as long as the entry stamp can be tracked back to a visa exempt entry or a tourist visa entry <- meaning you're good to enroll, and apply for one.

GO get the 60 day covid extension before the 25th when the program runs out, THEN get on over to a school, enroll and get the process started for the documentation you need to apply for the 90 day Non-ED visa at the immigration office.

Good luck with it. (y)

I believe OP got the answer to his questions. Thank you for your cooperation.

When does your current extension end?

I suggest you try another COVID extension now...and explore the Ed visa during that extension period.

Are you really planning to study Thai language?

My 30-day TR extension ends on Jan 31.

My plan currently is to try for the covid extension this week and then start the ED process next week.

Yes, I want to study Thai.

Have you asked your Thai Immigration office your question?

Might be a better start for you now.

And have you asked the school you wish to study with ?

When did you first arrive into Thailand this time?

Have you obtained more than one COVID extension?

Have you held an Ed Visa before?

Where are you located?

What Thai immigration office do you use?

-Haven't asked the office; I'll be going out there this week

-Haven't asked the school because I haven't gotten the covid extension yet and I think they're just going to tell me to skip it and get the ED visa right now so they can make money sooner haha

-First arrived early November (did the 30-day extension on my TR-60 visa)

-Have not obtained any covid extension yet; I'm just thinking about this scenario for if I do get approved for an extension (applying this week). If it wasn't possible to switch from covid extension to ED, I would skip attempting to get the extension and just get the ED right now.

-Never have held an ED visa

-Bangkok

-Chang Watthana

Thanks!
