TLDR : Answer Summary
The user is seeking urgent advice regarding their retirement visa expiring on December 13, 2023, while their passport is valid only until February 14, 2024. Various responses indicate that it's possible to apply for an extension based on the current passport's validity. However, the extension will only be granted until the passport's expiration date. It's strongly advised to renew the passport before applying for a visa extension to avoid complications, as Thai immigration typically requires a passport to be valid for at least six months. Users also share experiences about the renewal process and suggest contacting the embassy or a visa service for assistance.

Why did you wait so long to apply for a new passport. This should have been started 4 to 6 months ago. Maybe you might have to go back to your country and get a new passport issued seeing time is running out.

Yes all depends if you have pages left in your passport then renew passport. Couple of years back I was forced to go to my country to renew passport for my embassy in Thailand took to long working visa issues , but totally fine first renew visa then sort out the passport will automatically show in new passport retirement visa is for one year , just at least 2 pages in old passport.šŸ‘šŸ‡¹šŸ‡

Contact your country's consulate and expedite a new passport.

Yes you can. Depending upon your home country you may not be able to get a "letter" asking Thai Immigration to transfer the visa from the old to the new. But that should not be a problem. Renewing a US Passport from overseas takes about 6 weeks. Plan on that length of time.... though it might be qicker.
Kuan ******
Actually you can.

Apply for a new passport.

Just inform immigration that the new passport processing.

After the visa done - get a letter to transfer the visa to new passport.
Brandon ************
@Kuan *****
just informing immigration you're getting a new passport means nothing. You'll still go on overstay when your extension ends.

Don't need a letter. Can just fill out a form at immigration. I did last month

I did it last month.

- get new passport.

- Transfer old visa to new passport (mandatory)

- Renew visa on new passport.

Get a new passport asap! Also keep the copy of the old passport, you need both new and old number. Dubai and Qatar (I assume you are from Doha) , always accommodate the passport urgency. Once you have new passport, submit the new application before the visa deadline.

In rare occasion you might be able to renew your visa now and explain to the authorities that you are on the process of getting a new passport . You might as well get a letter from your embassy that your new passport is on its way.

Nevertheless you need new passport asap.

All you can do-it-yourself. Donā€™t pay for the services claimed by some companies that they can help. Save your $$&

Always renew your passport 18 months before renewal date then no issues with extension of stay etc
Steve **********
@Peter ********
you need the newPP to transfer your new visa stamps in.they won't transfer if PP due to expire.

Check your 90 day, and TM-30.

The fact that visa and PP so close, IO may play hardball..be prepared, and apologetic
Peter *********
@Steve *********
what that to do with my reply ????

Expedite your passport asap. Copy your old one as it will have to go with the renewal application. Also your renewal payment receipt and paperwork, that may help. Reapply also after youā€™ve started for PP. same day if possible.
Steven ***************
@Edna ******
. I'd be careful with that advice. New passports often have new passport numbers, rendering passport number void on extension application if you don't wait for new passport first.

I think requirement is that you must have 6 months left on passport for a visa application

Extension of stay could be different though.
Burnard ************
@Stephen ******
Could be. But beware "Immigration Discretion"
Frank **********
Not very smart to wait until the last minute to figure out what to do.
Edna *******
@Frank *********
thatā€™s no contribution to solving the problem. We all get busy. Thailandā€™s unrelenting paperwork and unnecessary trips, contributed also.

why did u not renew ur passport LONG before now?
Anna *****************
It about the same price, if you use agency will be the same with start the new one when you get passport but you need to make sure you get it by the time passport expires, the only renew event you have to pay twice let say

Start new 35,000

Renew 18,000 bath Then renew in February 18,000 bath

So only 1000 different,

Renew it each time took 1 day that the good thing

The new one is waiting a month to get 15 months stamp but it mean you get more date but have to go out

If you donā€™t want to travel renew better option that mean you need to make sure it coming back by February
Anna *****************
Uk now passport take 15 day, Australia 7 day if applicable in good I donā€™t know what passport holder you have

You can contact if we can help you.

that's your own fault. You have to go through the full application process at immigration both times. But you failed to renew your passport when you should have so now you'll have to pay the price twice

You can for the time left on your passport youā€™ll need a new one and unfortunately start all over
Johnny **********
You need 6 months on your passport I'd be getting that sorted 1st
John **********
@Johnny *********
no you don't
Burnard ************
@John *********
Depends what Immigration Officer he gets.

It will fall under "discretion" and usually Immigration discretion does not favor the foreigner.
John **********
@Burnard ***********
really it doesn't. Thailand will let you enter the country with less than 6 months on your passport, the same is true for extensions
Burnard ************
@John *********
You know this from experience?

Beware "Discretion" can be used to break/bend their own policies. This is Thailand. Written rules are not viewed in the same way as in the West.
John **********
You will get an extension up until your passport expiry date. I'd go get the extension asap then apply for a new passport immediately and hope you get it in time to apply for another extension in February
Thelittle ************

@John *********
extension like which type?

@Thelittle ***********
you said you are on a retirement visa so that's what I answered

No, the passport must be valid for at least 6 months. Go get a new one, transfer the stamp to a new one, and apply for a new one.

nice to hear there is flexibility somewhere in the world - any office in any country I am aware of you need 6 month minimum left on your passport - basic travel knowledge.

Renew your passport before the visa expires
Brandon ************
You can apply for an extension yes, but your extension will only be until the end of your passport validity. So if you are granted an extension it will be until 14 February. Then you need to get a new passport and you will have to apply for an extension again before 14 February, and this will be your new annual extension date.
Brown ********
@Brandon ***********
wow. I actually thought there needed to be at least 6 months after the term of the visa ending to get it extended. Good to know that
Brandon ************
@Brown *******
You require 6 months to apply for a visa. An extension is not a visa.
