I have a retirement visa (with six months left on it) but when in Australia last week my passport was stolen and I had to get a replacement passport, so I no longer have the visa stamp. Can I simply renew my existing visa or do I have to restart the entire costly process all over again? (I have photos of the visa in lost passport etc). I have had to re-enter on a tourist visa.

TLDR : Answer Summary
The user is facing issues with their retirement visa after losing their passport while in Australia and having to get a replacement. They want to know if they can renew their existing visa or if they need to restart the entire process due to re-entering Thailand on a tourist visa. Responses from the community suggest that there is a process for transferring the visa stamp to the new passport, but re-entering on a different visa type may complicate the situation. It is advised to visit the immigration office with all relevant paperwork, including police reports and evidence of the lost visa.

By re-entering visa exemption it means you have to start the process again or use an agent and pay the "fines" + their fee. I know this cos we forgot our rentry permit once!! The agent will help with the transfer of the stamp also though with a police report that's easy to do....also have experience 😜

Why didn't you straighten out at thai embassy in Australia before you left?

Call the immigration office. You’ll get 5 different answers here. Canberra office is very helpful. Common sense would suggest your visas are electronically generated and a simple re stamp will do the trick.

Normally entering on a different entry type forfeits whatever you had. You would have needed to argue this at the airport to be stamped back in with your previous extension. Now that you stamped in without it, it's 99% gone.
But I'm not sure why you say it's a costly process to start all over. 2000 baht at immigration to convert to non-O. Wait 60 days then 1900 baht to apply for 1-year extension.

There is certainly a process to transfer a stamp from an existing visa into a new passport, but that MIGHT have been compromised by re-entering instead of working with the embassy wherever you were when the passport was replaced (I say might because it would in some countries, but I don’t know it to be true here). I think you need to pay a visit to immigration to untangle this. Take any paperwork trails you have about the replacement passport and your old visa with you.

Do you have a police report and/or a letter from your passport office regarding your replacement passport?
You should be able to take that to the Immigration Office that issued your extension to get the stamp transferred to your replacement passport unless someone knows better because you entered on a visa exempt stamp
