G’day all,

My retirement visa is due for a yearly extension on Dec 6 2021 and my Australian passport expires mid September 2022.

I will be getting a new passport about 6 months prior to the expiration so approximately March 2022

1) Can or how does my visa get transferred to the new passport?

2) If I get the multiple re-entry permit will that also transfer across?

3) Should I try to get a new passport now before this visa expires?

Thanks for any advice 🙏🏽

TLDR : Answer Summary
The original poster is seeking advice on transferring their retirement visa from their expiring Australian passport to a new one, including questions about the re-entry permit and the timing for obtaining a new passport before the visa expiration. Responses indicate that the visa transfer can be done at immigration, emphasizing the importance of obtaining the new passport before the visa expiration and clarifying that the visa is actually an extension of stay.

I'm shutting this down. This is NOT an Aus passport group, this is a Thai visa advice group. He's also NOT getting a new visa, but instead a one year extension of stay. I see no point keeping this post open. Thank you.

If apply for visa in Dec they only give 9 months to passport expiry date

He would NOT be applying for a visa; he would be applying for a one year extension of stay.

get new passport first.

then transfer thai visa.

with covids, make sure to add extra timeline for passport applications.

it’s much simpler to transfer visa rather than short of passport time when applying for a new 1 year thai visa.

>Can or how does my visa get transferred to the new passport?

You *DO NOT* have a visa, you have an extension of stay. Your extension of stay will be for one year, or the length of the time remaining on your passport, whichever one is shortest.

You will take both your new and old passport to the immigration office, and they will transfer the stamp over.

> If I get the multiple re-entry permit will that also transfer across?

I believe it does. I would wait on purchasing a multiple entry re-entry permit until the borders reopen though.

>Should I try to get a new passport now before this visa expires?

YES! This will let you stay for an entire year.

thanks mate that pretty much answered everything for me.

I guess if if anyone had experience getting a new Australian passport here it would be handy to know approximately how long that takes?

I've renewed my Australian passport 3 or 4 times here. I don't recall it being a very long process - maybe 2 weeks. It will take 2 visits to the Australian Embassy. Once to apply and once to collect. They don't post the new passport as they need to invalidate your old one.

Note this is pre-covid so everything has probably changed now.

yeah you can’t get an appointment to go there now.

Thanks for the info 👍

Pauly Gee once I lodged my passport application it took less than 2 weeks to receive from embassy.

thanks, I’ve hit a little obstacle now

@Pauly ****
try emailing the Embassy.

Not sure they'll be able to help but worth a shot. I needed some documents certified recently and they did it without having to go for an appointment.

You'll have to ask a local group that question
