TLDR : Answer Summary
Opening a bank account in Thailand with a DTV visa can be challenging as many banks are not familiar with this new visa type. Some banks may require a residency certificate and could attempt to sell expensive health insurance as a condition for account opening. Experiences vary, with some individuals successfully obtaining accounts through Bangkok Bank and KBank, while others face repeated refusals. It's suggested to consider using an agent who can assist in navigating the requirements, which often include proof of residence and possible financial obligations.

Work with an agent. It’s easy for them. It costs between 4,000- 6,500 THB, but they can handle everything for you without any issues.

insurance isn't that bad or expensive if they do insist though, 500b/yr which gives you 5000b/incident, no excess, for accident insurance, i used it just had to show the debit card at the hospital. Good for small bumps and scratches at least

I would like to get bank account too on DTV in Bangkok.

I learnt the following

Issue 1 - some banks require certificate of residence from immigration. This seems easy to get in Pattaya but difficult to get in Bangkok - even with 12 month Bangkok lease and TM30.

Issue 2 - even if you manage to find a bank to allow you to be a customer, they may force you to buy expensive health insurance

I’m told that using an agent in Pattaya solves both these issues, the account they get u, isn’t required to get the expensive insurance - so once you pay the agent costs it ends up around the same cost as if you did it yourself

Happy to hear from people that had different experiences, especially from Bangkok

What you say is correct about agent and bank account in Pattaya. Many of them seem to use the Bangkok Branch close to Big C on Pattaya Klang. I have an account there and if I go to the branch I see the agent's workers in there. The cost is about 5k for them to open an account for you and no need to take out the insurance.

I opened a bank account with a 3-month tourist visa. I am sure you can open a bank account with a DTV visa. I can recommend Bangkok bank as a bank. If you have a local friend, it will be useful to take it with you.

I opened my bank account 15 months ago. Recently, many tourists have been caught opening a bank account with a tourist visa and trading P2P on Binance without a work permit. Maybe the new government may have banned it. Good luck mate 😇

The money has to come from outside Thailand. You cannot serve a Thai or a foreigner living in Thailand even over the internet.

They even accept your bank account in the UK for 500k in the visa procedure. It does not necessarily have to be a local bank account.

As far as I have seen on forums and social media, many people staying on the Married and Retired visa are trying to convert to DTV. It is almost equivalent to Thai Elite visa. They think DTV is the best visa type.

that’s not what’s going on at all. The new tax laws are to bring Thais who have foreign assets into the Thai tax system. Don’t listen to the YT hype. Most Thailand YouTubers have 0 idea what they’re talking about.

At Aseannow we have been talking about the new tax law for almost a year. Some people even claim that after we sent large sums of money from abroad to a Thai bank, the bank started to call the customer and ask if they paid the tax on the amount. Everyone is waiting to see what will happen at the end of the year. The vast majority say that they will be forced to leave Thailand and started looking for alternative locations.

If you haven't watched this about the DTV, I watched this and immediately applied afterwards. Give it a watch, it's an exclusive interview with the man in the Thai Government who oversees the entire Visa program.

yep, they ask for long term visa, show them the DTV and then they get confused. 1 of them was aware and said they are waiting to learn more but currently cannot offer an account.

Like many things in Thailand they will wait for instructions from above to filter down. Then there will be certain branches more liberal in their interpretation of the rules in order to get numbers up.

Try in Kbank or Bangkok Bank, in Bangkok only. Go there being well dressed.

If it doesn't work in some branch, try another one.

that's what i heard from a guy who was allowed to open an account there.

He said it could play a role in the chances of success, so it costs nothing to do it 🤷🏼‍♂️ (except some hundreds of baths for buying clothes^^)

that is a draw back with the DTV you cannot work for a Thai company. If has been reported that if people have a tourist stamp they cannot get bank account.

every branch of every bank has its own rules. Some say a residence certificate helps but it shouldn't be necessary. Just keep trying different branches until you find one that allows you or find someone to help
