TLDR : Answer Summary
The conversation centers around the challenges of opening a bank account in Bangkok with a DTV visa. Multiple comments indicate that new regulations have made it difficult, if not impossible, for holders of the DTV visa to obtain a bank account. Some recommend specific banks or agents that may assist, while others share that the DTV is not considered a long-term visa, thus making it ineligible for bank account opening.

So if a bank account isn’t the route to go then can someone advise what is the best strategy to access funds in that country?

you can get a prepaid Kasikorn card at the airport, and you can use prompt pay with it….. some have reported issues with topping it up

You can western union money to yourself. Just download the app and add yourself as sender and receiver.

A tourist is most likely not able to open a account in your country too, so nothing specifik to Thailand.

Just use card in ATM, as other tourists in Thailand.

Try opening one as a citizen in the UK. I had to jump through hoops to open HSBC in UK and I had an account with them in Singapore. I paid for some expedited process in the end.

I was based in Singapore at the time and was moving back to UK. Used my sisters address in UK. All arranged by main branch in Singapore and cost about 300 SGD. Would have been late 2016.

Ah ok, it is near impossible now for non uk residents to do so without a UK address.

It was hard enough back then and I had accounts with them in Singapore for years. Still open I think and has about 300 SGD in it. If I open a company in Singapore might try to use it again. I have a DBS account active but HSBC might be useful due to UK account with them

Thanks I hear ppl mention an app called wise but not sure how all of it works. Thanks for your feedback

Wise is very good. I use that. It is a multicurrency online account you transfer funds to and it will exchange money into the currency of your choice. You then use the card in the currency eg THB. Despite the recent clampdown, you can still open a bank account via an agent as Greg mentioned. The cost to do so has increased though.

It’s like any other debitcard and a exchenge booth in one, you put money into the account in any currency, and go to ATM and withdraw the money in Baht.

There is an agent in this group can help you in Bangkok. Cost depends on passport you hold but it is not cheap compared to other locations

Not happening right now new regulations and a huge crackdown last week agents won't even do it right now
