TLDR : Answer Summary
The discussion primarily revolves around whether a spouse can obtain a visa linked to a retirement visa held by their partner. While many contributors confirm that one can 'piggyback' on the retirement visa, obtaining a Non-Immigrant O extension remains a topic of clarification, especially regarding independent financial requirements. It's generally advised to contact Immigration for precise regulations and to verify document requirements, such as marriage certificates being certified and translated.

in theory there is NO age limit and whether a partner is or isn't 50 they can still "piggy back" or Klingon (cling on) to their spouse's yearly extension.
Once someone turns 50, the immigration offices try to make that person get their own extension based on retirement BUT there is no obligation on the applicant that you have to do that.
Lets make it nice, no humiliating or making feminist angry the reason for the Extension of Stay is based on being a family member of an alien permitted a temporary stay in the Kingdom.
As a foreign married couple you get every year a non o with 800.000 Thb on bank or if just one has some income statement from embassy. If you apply together you get this Non O based on being a couple. I tried to explain Extension 1 on retirement, other on being family, but he kept on going he did this with his parents so he is correct.
Sadly no, Tod, one of the members was complaining that it was sexist to use the term "piggybacking" when describing how a wife can remain in Thailand when the husband has a proper visa and work permit.
Nah not really. I have much better things to do than performing toddlers behaviour. I deleted the convo because the majority of it did not add any value. I shared an real life experience and that was said to be not true... really? And yes I expressed my opinion on piggy backing being a humiliating thing in some cases.... I admit I got carried away by an empty-life troll's remarks. Normally I only comment or share advise of things which I have personally experienced and which I know are 100% correct. Many others should do the same or this group is doomed to go down the same dark road as Thaivisa...
I might be wrong but I think that rule changed a while back, now new applicants have to have individual amounts, of course you can use the 800,000 and stagger your applications ! Best check with the visa part of www.thaivisa .com
. AFAIK, you'll need your marriage certificate certified by your embassy and translated into Thai and then certified by the MOFA, Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Maybe Tod, the expert here, can confirm exactly what you need.
