TLDR : Answer Summary
If you obtain a retirement visa (Non-Immigrant O) in Thailand, your foreign wife who is under 50 can apply for a Non-Immigrant O visa as a dependent. This visa allows her to stay for 90 days, and she can then apply for an extension based on her status as a dependent of a long-term resident.

Can you only obtain the dependent visa if you are under 50? If over I assume you must get your own extension of stay with the money seasoned in a Thai bank?

@Kristen *******
there is no age limit on who can get the "trailing spouse" Non-O visa or matching extension because they are married to someone on a 'retirement visa'.

SOME offices try to switch the spouse off the trailing spouse matching extension once they turn 50 but there is no rule that says you have to get your own visa. I know a couple in their late 70's one on a retirement extension and one on a trailing spouse for many years now.

You just can't get that initial 90 day Non-O inside the country because trailing spouse Non-O's for people married to retirement visa holders are not issued in country

Thank you for the information.

You apply for the Non Immigrant O visa based on being over 50 years of age, this visa gives you 90 days of stay and during the last 30 days of that stay you can apply at Immigration for the Extension of Stay based on being over 50 years of age.

Your wife can apply for the Non Immigrant O visa based on being dependent of an alien with a long stay inside the Kingdom, this visa gives also 90 days of stay and during the last 30 days she can apply for the Extension of stay based on being a dependent of an alien with a long stay inside the Kingdom.

Doesn't their marriage certificate need to be notorised? Or is this a different and easier way of getting the 'trailing spouse' extension?

we are in Phuket and did not require it notarized for our extension.

If I understand correctly, both of us will seek to obtain Non immigrant O visas. One based on being over 50 and the other as dependant. Do the dependant need to have

0 thb deposited in Thai bank same as main Non O applicant ?

good question

No, there is no financial requirement for the Extension of Stay based on being a dependent of an alien with a long stay.

@Robert ******
but does the dependant have to obtain the initial Non-O visa outside of Thailand?

@John *********
yes you can’t get a dependent (married to foreign national with a long term visa) visa inside of Thailand.

@Benjamin *****
ok perhaps they can for Non Bs, etc. I thought they all to apply outside of Thailand. Happy for someone with direct experience can confirm.
