Can one spouse switch from a retirement visa to a trailing spouse visa while the other remains on a retirement visa in Thailand?

My husband and I are each currently on our own retirement visa extension. Is it possible when we need to extend or renew to only have one of us on a retirement visa and the other as a spouse or dependent? We are both US citizens. We are a married man and woman and have used the monthly deposit of 65,000 baht each per month into a joint account to meet financial requirements. What would the dependant requirements be?

TLDR : Answer Summary
A couple currently holding separate retirement visa extensions in Thailand is considering the possibility of one spouse switching to a trailing spouse visa while the other continues on the retirement visa. They have been meeting financial requirements through a joint bank account. It is advised to consult the immigration office for specific requirements for the trailing spouse extension, as this type does not have financial requirements. Additionally, it's important to present the marriage certificate and ensure eligibility based on the immigration office's guidelines.

Before you need new extensions both you and your husband need to slog on over to your immigration office, get the handout listing the requirements for "trailing spouse" extension and make sure you can meet them.

There are no financial requirements for the "trailing spouse" extension, you're 'piggy backing' on to a primary extension holder who does meet the financial requirements.

Lucky your immigration office allows joint accounts, usually they require double the financial requirements if they're going to allow a joint account and I don't know any couple who each have a retirement extension based on monthly income who use joint accounts here.

Again, you need to talk to your immigration office WAY before you're thinking of switching reasons for one of you from retirement to trailing spouse..

Take your marriage certificate too so they can tell you what has to happen for that to be accepted by the immigration office (most have to go thru some certification process which depending on country can be convoluted)

Thank you Todd! Your expertise is always so helpful. We do have a joint account but we do have to put in double the income. That is why we want to switch to “trailing spouse”.
