Hi

My wife and I are looking to retire to Chiang mai. I have been advised to get our wedding certificate legalised and then apply for the non o visa jointly. Which then only one of us will need the retirement visa and the other gets a dependent visa once we are in Thailand . So only having to put 800k in the bank . I was told they may not issue it because as she is over 50 they may say get her own retirement visa. Was just wondering if any other married couple has managed it this way .Thanks Steve .

TLDR : Answer Summary
A couple planning to retire in Chiang Mai is advised to legalize their wedding certificate and apply jointly for a Non-O Visa. One spouse can then obtain a retirement visa while the other applies for a dependent visa, requiring a minimum of 800,000 THB in a single bank account. Concerns are raised regarding the issuance of the dependent visa due to one spouse being over 50, leading to suggestions that both apply for retirement visas. The conversation includes experiences and advice about the retirement extension process and the importance of an international bank transfer for the required funds.

Benefit on the ON-LINE application is that computers do not talk.

You type and choose the options needed, so make two account, one for you, one for the missus, and apply for one Non Immigrant O visa based on being over 50 years of age (retirement and for one Non Immigrant O visa based on visiting family or staying with applicants family resided in Thailand.

NO problem with your wife becoming a TRAILING SPOUSE to your Non O Visa as retired and your One year extension of stay as retired.

ONLY One 800,000 Thai baht in a Thai bank account in your name only is required. BUT it MUST be transferred internationally to your bank account.

When you arrive into Thailand, both of you visit the local Thai Immigration office serving your address in Thailand. Ask them for their list of requirements for the Non O Visa as retiree and the One year extension of stay as retired

It's also possible for you both to obtain the Non O Visa as retiree from your home country Thai Embassy or Consulate.

Look at their websites for its requirements.

What are your passport nations ?

All Thai Visas are now applied for using the Evisa online application system and the UK Thai Embassy reviews the application for issue.

NO longer can you apply for a Thai Visa at the Thai Embassy or Consulate in the UK.
