TLDR : Answer Summary
The consensus is that you cannot simply fly to Vientiane in the morning and return the same day to obtain a tourist visa to convert to a retirement visa. You need to officially apply for a tourist visa at the consulate in Laos, which can take several days to be issued. If you hold a visa-exempt passport, you can re-enter Thailand to get a stamp, but you must cancel your work permit before leaving. Additional complications arise if you have insufficient funds for the retirement visa requirements. It is advisable to consult a visa agency for assistance.

Colin Oconn If you mean time out of Thailand before visa exempt re-entry there has never been an "official" time. Many land borders have local rules but there is nothing official i.e. in law.
You should take time to learn what are the existing visas. Then going to Vientiane or anywhere in Laos is a good idea. You can come back the same day with a visa exemption only, provided that the immigration thinks you can still have one. For any kind of visa, you have to apply online in Laos or any other country. It takes at least 2-3 working days for a tourist visa and more time, sometimes much more time, for other categories of visa.
No. If you want to apply for a tourist visa you have to travel to Laos, apply for the visa using the evisa system, visit the consulate and pay for the visa then wait for it to be issued before returning to Thailand. If what you want is a visa exempt entry and your passport entitles you to one then you can cross the border and return to get the entry stamp. BUT you are currently on an extension of stay based on working inside Thailand so before doing this you should cancel your work permit and the extension of stay prior to travelling to Laos. I'm not really understanding why you are so desperate to do this? Is your current extension of stay due to end imminently and before you are able to cancel your work permit? Or is there something else driving this?
No hurry but I gave my resignation yesterday, so now I'm waiting on the paperwork from my school. So once they've cancelled my WP and Visa I have 7 days right? Then I have 2 choices, go to immigration and change it to a retirement visa, or go out and come back in on a tourist visa and apply for the retirement visa, is that right?
so you handed in your resignation yesterday but when will you actually stop working? That's important. If you've given like a months notice or whatever you need to keep both extension and work permit valid until you stop work, but you can cancel in advance of the date you will stop with the paperwork from the school.
the moment you stop working your extension of stay is invalid so you are technically on overstay since that day. Do you have a current re-entry permit in your passport? If not I'd leave tomorrow and come back visa exempt while waiting for the school to cancel your work permit and hope they do so before you need to apply for a visa. Difficult to know what else you can do
THEY cannot cancel your extension, not visa. Only you can do that, it's in YOUR passport. And it doesn't matter if it's cancelled or not. The reason for that extension is no longer valid, that means your extension is no longer valid.
Colin Dorman only you can cancel your extension. If you stopped work then you are on overstay. There is no 7 days to leave, that is applying for any extension, (which you are ineligible for} and you get a 7 day extension denied stamp, and you must leave the country by then.
Colin Dorman . . if you already have a Thai bank account in your sole name with a minimum of 800,000 THB already sitting in it, and a rental contract, you can theoretically do the "change of visa type" from a visa-exempt entry to an initial 90-days Non-Imm-O retirement visa. . . . in case you got none of that, you need to expect to pay an agent up from 60,000 THB to 90,000 THB to get around the existing law
if you don't have the funds in a Thai bank account to satisfy either of the marriage or retirement visa requirements there is absolutely nothing that you can do yourself to obtain either of them, you might be able to get a 90 day visa outside of Thailand but you won't be able to get a 12 month extension. Go and speak to reputable visa agency and see if they are able to help you.
Colin Dorman before you can use the "income method", you need to have collected 12 months of transfers from abroad to your Thai bank account of a minimum of 65,000 THB, month for month, not missing a single month. And show on Immigration a 12-months bank transfer statement, the money mus be coded in the bankbook as having come from abroad. Only then after you got issued a 1-year extension of the stay permit, you can take the 800,000 THB out of your account. But you must continue the 65,000 THB transfers
Colin Dorman the proof of income is good enough for the application to the visa. But you cannot use your income for the application to the 1-year extension of the stay permit, on Immigration, at least not in the first year
Colin Dorman if your embassy is still issuing an affidavit of income, you can use it. However I see from your profile, you are from Poole, England. This means, that you cannot use the income affidavit for a first year application to a 1-year stay permit. Immigration wants to see it, but your embassy does not issue it anymore. That's why for the first year you need the 400,000 or 800,000 thb deposit
