I’m looking at heading to Vientiane to get a tourist visa from the Thai consulate there. Just to make sure: this type of visa is for a 60 day period of stay max and can be renewed once, isn’t it ?

TLDR : Answer Summary
A tourist visa obtained from the Thai consulate in Vientiane is valid for 60 days, with the possibility of extending your stay for an additional 30 days at a local immigration office for a fee of 1,900 baht. The visa allows a single entry and must be activated within three months of issuance. It is important to prepare by having the required documents, including proof of sufficient funds and an appointment for the visa application.

I’m already in Thailand and trying to stay in the country until 8 February. After the 60 + 30 day period with the tourist visa, can I then do a border bounce, and re-enter getting a 45 day visa exemption. Would I get into problems trying to do that ? Is there any better solution ?

I am currently on an STV visa which expires on October 16th ( I can’t extend as the damn scheme ceases end of September:(

can a tourist visa be changed for a retirement visa ( I meet the criteria) , although I am not retired ?

I am just here, in Thailand, on a 6 month sabbatical from work and will go back to OZ for one last semester, then retire 🙂

@Patrick ******
you can change it to a 90 day Non-O visa based on being over 50 (retirement) if you meet the financial requirements. Once you get back from Vientiane on the tourist visa GO talk to the immigration office in the area where you live to get the hand out listing the documentation requirements to do it

I placed the TOPIC of Vientiane on your post...

CLICK on it and all posts about it will pop up for you to read... important to read others experiences in getting the Visas from the Vientiane Laos Thai Embassy

You will get a single entry tourist visa, it will be valid for 3 months <- meaning you have that long to ENTER thailand and when you do stamp in you will get stamped in for 60 days and you can extend that ONE time for 30 days at the immigration office where you stay for 1900 baht

Did you read the requirements posted at the thai consulate in Vientiane?

Do you have a bank account that has had 20K baht in it the last 3 months (foreign account is okay too)

Did you make a booking for the online appointment system so you can actually show up and get IN the gate to apply?

is this amount a daily requirement for those 3 months or just at the end of each month's statement you need to have that in your account?

@Bryan ******
no idea you show a balance of 20K baht for 3 months, Couldn't really say how they parse it out but I sure wouldn't use that consulate if you don't have it.

The consulate in Savannakhet only requires the 20K baht in the bank on the day you apply so if you're not sure you'd make it in Vientiane, you should use Savannakhet

Yeah, i havent seen any reports on how exactly the 20k 3 months should look like. Is it all trancactions 3 months or just 20k end 3 months.

Been there many times prior to covid times, at the time screenshot of min 20k balance was fine.

@Elton ******
i think you'd be okay printing ONLY month end balance for 3 months showing that you are above the 20K baht threshold

Thank you for the quick response Tod!

also remember the thai consulate in Vientiane takes THREE WORKING DAYS processing time. You turn your passport in Monday morning, you get it back Wednesday afternoon. You show up any time after Wednesday to apply and you wait the weekend in Lao to get your passport back the following week 🙂

I didn't mean to harp on you, I just wanted you to know what's what before you slog all the way up there was all 🙂

@Patrick ******
you shouldn't have any issues then, and as I said you'll get in on a 60 day (TR60) stamp and you can get one 30 day extension from that at the immigration office where you stay
