Should I apply for a Non-O retirement visa in Thailand or Laos?

I’ve just found out I should have really applied for a Non O retirement visa before I got there. Flying Monday. I was planning to convert my tourist visa to Non O in Thailand and open a bank account just to park the 800k.

I already have a Thai bank account but would it be cleaner to have a short holiday in Thailand, then fly up to Laos and apply up there?

I think the O/P has more than enough information to decide what they want to do going forward

Best of luck to them, (y)

The most important thing is always that depending on your local immigration office where you going to apply they might require the money to have been wired IE transferred from abroad which needs to be proven by the bank by your special statement that the money was coming from abroad...

If you're transferring the money the wise that would mean that you need to say that it's for Visa purposes.

But as always check the local requirements of your immigration office.

And you need to apply 3 weeks before the expiration of your current entry.

careful, "apply 3 weeks before your current stamp expires" is only a Chiang Mai office rule <- they require a minimum of 15 business days left on your stamp, where as most offices only require a minimum of 15 days

Since you already have bank account you can convert your tourist visa into non o and then retirement visa.

traditional route. And the route I’d planned. Thanks a lot.

there's not much 'traditional' about applying for a visa in-country. The traditional route is to apply for the visa upfront, from your home country. Until recently, that was the only way to get it. And people who didn't get one upfront went to apply in Laos.

What's the problem applying inside Thailand if you have the cash and the bank account?

As Tod said, if you already have a Thai bank account you should be okay. It's probably a bit easier to get the non-O before coming, but you can still apply for the non-O in Thailand if you have a bank account already. Go to immigration when you get here and ask for their list of requirements for the non-O and deposit 800k into your account. Good luck.

Not true. The non-O and non O-A are available outside Thailand.

it sounds cleaner going to Laos regarding seasoning and opening the second account in Bangkok for parking the 800k.

That’s what I’ll do. And have a chat with my bank too.

nothing anyone said implicates that solution! You going to the bank and talking to them the only probable outcome is that they close your bank account if you start talking about it. Leaving and involving a foreign embassy the thai I wouldn't expect you to be able to produce maybe the correct papers and you possibly get other hurdles.

Why would going to laos have anything to do with seasoning?

And why would you open up second bank account?

Once you have the NON O inside Thailand, you can open any other account you like. You have zero reason to go to Laos.

The reason that most people get Non-O visas from the thai consulate in their country before they come here is because it's getting harder and harder to open a bank account on a free stamp entry.

You said you already have a thai bank account so that's not an issue for you

You also most likely aren't entering on a "tourist visa" either and are just showing up 'free stamp' (60 day visa exempt) entry.

So get here, get the 60 days, get the 800K in the bank account and then when you have 3 weeks or so left on your current entry stamp GO apply for the in country 90 day Non-O visa (which you can do without having the funds seasoned at every immigration office BUT Jomtien). Pay the 2000baht, wait the 2 weeks under review period, go back get the Non-O visa and new 90 day stamp inked in

THEN

You wait until the funds are seasoned the 2 months and you have 30 days or less left on your new 90 day stamp and apply for the year extension for 1900baht. They issue that on the spot, after that buy a re-entry permit (1000baht single/3800baht multiple)and you're done..

Conversely go to Lao, apply online thru the eVisa web-portal, once you've applied then you take that confirmation and go to the lao consulate to pay for the visa and then wait in Lao until it's approved, print it out and come back getting stamped in for 90 days when you do

absolutely no reason to do this if you’re using an immigration office that issues a Non O.

I said that they had TWO choices and remember not every immigration office in the country issues in country Non-Imm visas AND Jomtien makes the 800k baht for the initial Non-O application be seasoned 2 months which might mess up their timeline IF they show up free stamp
