TLDR : Answer Summary
Yes, it is possible to apply for a Thai driver's license while holding a 60-day tourist visa, provided you meet certain requirements. You must obtain a medical certificate and a residency certificate, which may need to be acquired from your local immigration office or embassy. The process may vary depending on location, with some offices possibly requiring a long-term visa instead. Having an International Driving Permit (IDP) can also simplify the process, as it is recognized in many places.

the wife’s is due to expire so I was going to do mine at the same time, if not I’ll stick to the international one

As long as you can get the required residency certificate you can do it. The rest is easy to get.

Omg. International driving license lasts 3 bloody years and costs 6 quid if your in UK. And I'm pretty sure most countries do the same as the Thai police pull over foreigners and check for that and only that unless you're drunk or not wearing a helmet then they are pulling you over for that.

Yes for 2 years

Up to you

Use an agent you don’t need to supply

The 3 year one is not valid in Thailand, only the one year one.

when being stopped for a traffic interaction(6 times no helmet) not once have I ever been asked when I entered the country . Show me the permit and give me your money. And hide it in the permit

@Stevie *******

@Nigel *******

lots of people make the same mistake 👍👍🙏

An IDP is much easier to get, and more useful as it works in many places.
Jx ******
You can do it without doing it $ if you get my drift.
SteBu ******
Yes. But like always, depending where you live

Some offices require you are on a long term visa so it will depend where you are. You will also need a residence certificate from immigration and a medical certificate, some immigration offices won't issue a residence certificate unless your on a long term visa and some require you to have done a 90 day report

finally a sensible answer on this thread.

If you have a 30-day visa exempt stamp or a 60-day tourist visa, you must go to your embassy to get the Resident Certificate.

@Pertti ************
Very few embassies will issue a residence certificate these days. Good luck with yours.

@Stuart ********
I'm not needing because I have tabien baan but maybe help others.
Stuart *********
@Pertti ************
A tabien baan will hold no sway at a DLT office. That’s because as a foreigner you are not listed in the blue book. You may own the property and have a Chanote title stating so but you aren’t in the Tabien Baan.

The only things most DLTs will accept is a residence certificate or a work permit - providing it lists your home address (some don’t).

@Stuart ********
Yellow tabien baan has my name were I'm living and my blue books were empty until the tenant registers their place of residence.

@Pertti ************
you can get one from immigration depending on where you are in Thailand. Some offices do, others dont.
Dieter ********
Yes, it works. More easy with International Driving License.

I got for Car and Motorbike (for Truck they asking me too but I don’t need in Thailand).

You need a private registration at immigration and someone who approve that you living there.

@Dieter *******
what do you mean by private registration? Thanks
Rob **********
@Des ********
he would be referring to a certificate of residency from the immigration office where you will be staying.
Jan ******************
Yes you can, you get two and two years until you have a Long stay visa.
Paul *******
Provided that you can obtain the required medical certificate from a doctor/,edical clinix/hospital and the residency certificate from your local Immigration office.
