Can somebody tell me how hard it is to get a motorcycle license in Thailand

I'm Canadian and only have a learner's license for a motorcycle in Canada

Does it matter what motorcycle you take your test on and do the training centers provide the motorcycle or do you have to provide that yourself

I don't know if they're all created equal I'm probably going to be traveling around Southern Thailand amongst the islands and going up to Chang Mai later

maybe some recommendations on who is good

Thanks

TLDR : Answer Summary
Obtaining a motorcycle license in Thailand can be a straightforward but time-consuming process for foreigners, including Canadians with only a learner's license. It typically involves taking a written test and a practical driving test. Using the DLT app can help schedule tests faster, and many expats recommend taking courses, such as those offered by Honda Safety, which provide the necessary training and assist with the licensing process. An International Driving Permit (IDP) with the motorcycle endorsement can simplify the process, potentially bypassing some testing requirements. Local driving schools generally supply the motorcycles for the test.

Ricorda che dovrebbe esserci 2 patente per motociclo !! Una normale fino a 400cc. E una speciale per motocicli oltre i400cc

I my opinion this is the best way to get a Thai motorcycle license. One of the driving schools is called Mityon Driving School. They do both car and motorcycle. When I went there I didn’t have a license to drive a motorcycle on my Canadian licence. I took the course here from Monday to Friday in Bang Saray just south of Pattaya. They supply everything and you do your practice on site. They do everything for you. Videos, exams and practical test. The only other thing you have to do is get a medical. They give you all the forms necessary for you to go to the Land and Transfer office to get your motorcycle license. Five yours ago I think I paid 1500 THB

If you can get an IDP with motorcycle endorsement you skip nearly all the tests.

Previous excellent post on the subject: Marlyn Culton

I did my training at Honda Safety since I had never riden before. It was great. I learned so much and got on the road so quickly.

You’ll need the pre riding course (2 days), then the basic course is (1 day), then the test is 1 day on the computer and 1 day actual driving test. So 5 days total.

They will set you up. Literally no one fails…they help you pass.

Total cost was 2,500 baht. 2,000 for pre riding course and then 500 for the basic course which includes the testing days. They don’t charge for test days. They also have deals they offer if you buy things up front, which I didn’t do.

Highly recommend them! And if you take these courses you don’t have to wait 4 weeks to get an appointment at the DLT. Honda Safety will help arrange an appointment for you via the DLT app. You’ll be in within a week. You’ll just submit the paperwork Honda Safety gives you to DLT and get license right on the spot. Even with an appointment and necessary paperwork the wait at the DLT was around 1 hour and 40 minutes. Not an easy process, but this is Thailand you learn deep patience.

Good luck!

I'm curious about the residency certificate can you get a motorcycle license just on a 60 day tourist Visa

Take 2 day course with Honda Safety cost around 2,000 baht they will then provide all you need to go to DLT to get motorcycle license issued. Think you will still need your IDP from Canada.

The IDP will have ticked off whether for a car, motorcycle, bus, etc. I don’t think if you have a car IDP from Canada that will help you get a motorcycle license in Thailand. If you have a valid license for the class you are going for, it saves some time, watching the video or something, if you have the IDP.

I did mine earlier this year.

Download the DLT app on your phone and book a test, Thais need to wait weeks or months but they have slots for farangs normally next day if you use the app, you will need to sit for a whole day in a test centre, 4-6 hours watching a video then some studying then the test, the test is actually a bit hard due to the bad translations and crazy thai questions such as monks don’t need to wear helmets and tanks can drive on roads, spend the 4 hours of watching video to study here

The practical part is easy and takes 5 minutes, you will pay 50-100 baht to hire the test bike, drive about a small course, even if you hit every cone and crash every kerb you will still pass. Then you pay the desk 100 baht and you got your license. If you fail the written test u can come back the next day and do it, I seen quite a lot of people fail actually the questions are impossible if you don’t study for hours.

Get your license in Canada and there’s no real testing required. Not a problem if you already have the endorsement in your country.

Canada is on a graduated license system. You get your learners then have several more steps to pass before you get fully licensed. In some provinces it takes up to 2 years and requires numerous courses.

Are you still in Canada? Did you get an IDP?
