Do you need to have residency status to get a driver license in Thailand?

More info: Currently on a tourist visa and my US license expires within a year so I can't apply for an IDL, or I can but it won't be valid (IDL needs 1 year validity in Thailand).

TLDR : Answer Summary
To obtain a driver’s license in Thailand, you typically need a residency certificate, which is challenging to secure on a tourist visa. Requirements can vary by location; for instance, in Bangkok, a 90-day report is necessary before applying, which tourists cannot provide. However, some areas, like Chiang Mai and Pattaya, may have more flexible options. A medical certificate, usually inexpensive, is also required. While an International Driving License (IDL) can be valid for three months in Thailand, long-term residents need to convert to a local license after that period.

it is at some places definitely possible to make a driving licence even with no visa(visa exemption).

It depends if you get a residence certificate from the immigration there.

that even could be a hotel adress at some.

Who do you think you are, you improve something with the same words that the other said anyway,

then you try to twist the issue and now you childishly bicker around.

You should not dish out if you can not stand the echo.

Every one of your comments so far has been redundant, arrogant and childish.

Grow up.

All you need to do is get a letter from where you stay stating you reside there, listing your name, country, date of birth & passport number, take that to immigration and request a certificate of residence for obtaining a Thai licence, it’s usually 500 baht per letter, you need this for car or bike licence and open bank account all can be done on tourist visa. You also need a medical certificate- fit to drive from a Thai doctor, usual cost 100 baht

Yes. You'll get a 2-year license. Best to apply at Chatuchak (main Land Transport Department office) in Bangkok, Pattaya, Samui, Phuket or another office which sees lots of foreigners (probably also the main one in downtown Chiang Mai, though not necessarily others that are located in the suburbs).

You'll need an affidavit from your embassy (if you're a US citizen I believe this service is no longer offered) so you'll need to approach immigration to see what's possible. Prepare to pay for this service especially since you're on a tourist visa. Apparently, immigration charges 500 Baht in most cases.

A medical certificate that shows you have a pulse and no major impediments to driving is also needed and can be requested from any clinic or hospital. Therefore, the major issue (the only one) is ensuring you can get proof of address from immigration. It might help to show up with a TM30 for an address in the province who's immigration office you're trying to use for this purpose.

You can't apply for an IDP unless in your home country anyway, and it's only good for 3 months inside Thailand. Requirements vary depending on where you are, some require a long term visa. All require a residence certificate and a medical certificate. The former you may be able to get from your embassy if immigration won't provide, the latter from basically any clinic.

my IDP states 1 year ?

@Bob ******
You should be OK to drive on that unless you become a Thai resident by converting to a non-immigrant visa, in which case the 3 month rule that John mentioned, applies.

@Bob ******
yep. Valid for a year but after 3 months inside Thailand you need to get a Thai license.

Most countries only allow you to use an IDP for a certain amount of time. So even though the IDP is valid, you cannot use to legally drive for the entire time if it's a long time.

It depends on where you'll be. Some places don't care what type of visa you're on and some do. And some places have other roadblocks.

You need a residency certificate to apply for a drivers license and in Bangkok you can only get that if you've already done a 90 day report which a tourist would never have the opportunity to do. That blocks you from getting one in Bangkok.

I'm pretty sure you could do it in ChiangMai, and there's a lot of agents that help to get one in Pattaya.
