What can I do if my national driver's license has expired but I have an international driver's license and need to drive in Thailand?

Knowing I will relocate to Thailand for work, I got an international driver's license from my home country from a legit company that issues international driver's license. My government-issued national driver's license has expired. My consulate won't translate my international driver's license for me, as the government did not issue it. I have my residence certificate. I am stuck. What can be done? Please help. Thanks.

TLDR : Answer Summary
The user faces challenges in obtaining a Thai driver's license due to their national driver's license being expired, despite holding a valid international driver's license. Comments from others suggest that it is possible to obtain a Thai license by passing a simple test and that the international license might be acceptable for driving. Additional recommendations include obtaining a medical certificate and visiting local driving resources for assistance.

I used international dl to get my Thai dl, they did not ask for my aus dl at all...

Also they had this sign on the desk, perhaps it will help you...

to be clear, my IDL was valid for both car and bike as per my DL in Aus, although they never wanted to see my Aus DL, only the IDL...

The Thai test is really simple. You turn up in your own car and have to show that you can park it and drive between some bollards. I watched it with around 40 other spectator two weeks ago and most never got out of first gear. The bike test is even easier and took around 1 minute of actual driving. There are plenty of online resources for checking out what they call the e-learning test which is the only part which could be a challenge - not because the questions are hard, but because the translation of them isn't always very clear.

Well, assuming you're not colour blind anyway. If you are, you'll have a problem, since this is one of the things that actually are tested above what you normally see in Europe.

Thanks. That's very helpful.

I wouldn't recommend it, but I have seen ads about getting a license without a test.

Your consulate will not transfer because once your original license expires so does the international as its just a copy of what you are licensed to operate at home. Probably get away with showing it to police in Thailand as they don't know your original has expired if they pull you over, but international license only good for one year if issued in AU

Just do the same tests etc as the Thais, you are the same as them in this instance - you have no valid licence.

Correct but you also need to go to the immigration for a residence statement and need a valid visa too.

Great. Is it like in the U.S.? Like, is there a handbook you can read (in English for farangs). So sit-down computer screen test and actual driving test?
Wim **************
I gues you also need a drivers licence from your goverment and together with the international you can change it into a Thai.
