Can I leave Thailand for a day and return on the same day without spending the night abroad?

It is almost my 6 month mark. I simply want to confirm - can I fly into a nearby country, spend the day, then come back to Thailand on the same day? Or do I need to come back the next day and spend the night in another country? Thanks 😊

TLDR : Answer Summary
The consensus among expats in the community is that you can fly to a nearby country and return to Thailand on the same day without needing to spend the night. While there are anecdotal stories of individuals having no issues with same-day returns, several commenters recommend at least an overnight stay to avoid any problems with immigration officers. Some suggest that taking a quick trip could be more enjoyable, while others caution that spending a night may be safer to ensure smoother re-entry.

I flew to Malaysia for lunch then came back 4 hours later and all was fine. No issues whatsoever. Not saying it will always be like that but in my case it was pretty smooth

Just listen to the facts. Yes you can go and come back the same day. Is there a chance you will be questioned because you did this instead of spending a night? No.

Our friends just did this and nearly weren’t let back in.

The lady at airport was NOT impressed with them - said they should ALWAYS STAY at least 1 night.

Shouted at them and called them idiots šŸ˜’

You can, but from what I’ve been hearing it’s best to do a ā€œvacationā€. Like I know I’m not a fan of burn season so I’ll plan it out to be somewhere else during those hot and Smokey months

Thank you all for your wonderful advice šŸ™ I am trying to get this done quickly as I am still breastfeeding… which means baby has to come with me. Not much of a vacation 😜 and I certainly don’t want to do anything overnight and deal with a crying exhausted baby. I am right next to the airport

GrayPanda6549 nonsense. Baby would be more chilled than you. 2 or 3 days in a border country what's the difference jave 6 kids and never a carry on. Express some milk and leave the baby in thailand it would be good to get a break l mean the baby not you 🤣🤣🤣

How can you "Guarantee" the $41...

Do you know where Gray 🐼 is located within the Kingdom...?

For me personally a lot less hassle to fly down to Malaysia and back for around 2,000b Return..

And usually less potential Hassle from I.O at airports than land boarders in my experience..

I can Ride to my local airport 20 mins away with No Visa charges..

So if Gray Panda is located in BKK or near a Good international Airport id suggest that rather than 10++ hrs on mini bus and the possibility of having to Pay extra "Tea Monies" at the Boarder etc..

John Doe Da 1st well...its a fact that it costs $41 visa on arrival into Laos - fresh, clean bills of course.

I don't know why you are talking about grey pandas or what significance they hold to crossing a border.

I prefer land borders and I travel a lot by car - so this is just my two cents - you can do as you please when it is your time.

I have always stayed at least overnight, and I have received the advice that an overnight stay is recommended. It's probably so that the exit and entry dates are not the same, but hey, do as you wish... That being said, I enjoy long weekend trips to nearby destinations like Malaysia, Philippines, Japan, and so on... Enjoy the wealth of beauty and culture that is Asia! <3

Good question.

I am personally so done with those countries around been there so many times back in the days of visa run

I have allergy to them.

I love Thailand

And nothing around Thailand feels worth to spend my time for me personally.

So if it's possible to fly to KL and stay in the airport and catch the next flight back, I'm very delighted to.

So it is possible?

No issue?

I hear you. Trying to see the good in other countries and cultures all the same since there is only one Thailand and I must travel to their countries to stay in Thailand

You don't need to travel to other countries just to stay in Thailand, that is only because you did not choose the right visa for your purpose of stay and use a tourist visa to try to live in Thailand.

So it is completely voluntary you visit all those countries around.

I wouldn’t necessarily say that, the correct visa for me is certainly a digital nomad visa because that’s exactly what I do, I work virtually. But I have to leave this country every six months… ļæ¼

GrayPanda6549 no, there is indeed no definition of the short time a nomad normally stays, it can be longer than half a year incidentally, but a nomad is not expected to have a fixed residence, and most leave within half a year because of taxation reasons in most countries.

That might also be the reason of the 180 days of a stay of DTV.

If you so bored of other countries and do not want to visit them, apply at Immigration for an Extension of Stay OR get a long term visa or one which can be extended year after year without travel

I do live here over 7 years

And have had restaurants and hotels and company here.

Now I'll switch to a different visa, coz I don't do business here anymore.

So my question was just about the necessity to stay away a certain time or not.

Everything else are just personal.

I already have one for many years.

But the dtv visa long term 5 years impose to go out each 6 months.

This was the question about.

NO, with a DTV you get 180 days of stay at entry and you can apply once for a 180 day stay at local Immigration.

Impose to go out each 360 days NOT 6 months.

You don't have to stay for the day but if you land in another country, why not enjoy a quick layover? Make the expense worth it

Do one of the land borders into Laos mate.

I guarantee the $41 to enter and whatever you pay for the transport to and fro from the border will be cheaper than what you would have to pay in airport fees.

Though, I appreciate if time is not on your side, the airport is the quickest option.

I did the land boarder in February and they denied 5 foreigners in front of me (not sure if that was TR or DTV though). I heard airport is easier.
