Just a quick question regarding a 60 day Visa exempt trip. During the 60 days, would you be able to exit Thailand to visit Laos or Myanmar and then return the same day/following day, without any re-entry issues?

TLDR : Answer Summary
Traveling under a 60-day visa exemption in Thailand, it is generally recommended to avoid same-day re-entry after exiting the country, especially to neighboring countries like Laos or Myanmar. Concerns have been raised regarding the risk of being denied re-entry, particularly based on one’s visa history and previous stays in Thailand. For Laos, several borders may require a minimum overnight stay, while Myanmar has limited access. Suggestions include spending a few days in the neighboring country to lessen risks or considering longer-term visa options for extended stays.

Thanks for your various replies, only a few of which addressed my question, before being side tracked into broader VISA discussions and did not address MY question. I was planning on going across the border with Thai family for the day to do some shopping/site seeing. It wasn't a border run, or looking for 30 day extension or anything untoward, just a day trip. However, I decided not to risk it and remained in Chaing Rai while the rest of my Thai family went. Thanks again

Leigh Griffiths short answer, incessamment you are Thai, you cannot leave and come back on a daytrip. You will loose your visa. You will also need a visa for cambodia or Laos.

The rules have changed. It now depends on how many days you have spent in Thailand and the number of tourist visa you have

To avoid being refused entry, i would certainly stay a week out of thailand. Vietnam, cambodia Siem Reap, Laos, so much to see.

Cambodia isn’t a good option as the immigration officer may be inclined to refuse entry. You would definitely be questioned as there’s a “conflict” going on.

Dan Brown True. But you have a choice, cambodia need not be your return point to thailand.

My ex husband does 6-8 months a year in Bangkok. He left on a few days trip out after his 90 day. He had used 3 x 90 days visas in 2 and a half years.

Border denied his reentry they turned him away and stated to apply for a retirement visa. Said no more extensions were going to be granted.

That’s scary. I’m going to leave Thailand and going to Vietnam for a couple of months. Hope I don’t have any problems reentering. My flight home is from BKK.

Question if I may ? Did your husband fly into Thailand or did he attempt to come across a border ? Please feel free to DM if you don’t want to read comments from the hecklers and imbeciles.

Dan Brown What is scary about it? He spent 6 to 8 months in Thailand in a year. That is not a tourist. That’s exactly who they do NOT want in Thailand, unless he gets a proper long-term visa. EXACTLY what’s been discussed ad nauseam around here for the last few months.

Michelle Grace correct,

Now it 60 days + 30 on applying for extention.

If you want to stay longer you get a visa.

Just asking for info really. Sorry I know it's not much help to the question posted. Would this be the sort of border bounce that the immigration are trying to crack down on ? Or is it more stopping the visa extension part ?

Cat Hunter if you are thinking of doing a visa run, once will probably cause no problems , especialy if you stay a good few days outside of Thailand. A few People have said they have had problems coming back from Cambodia into Thailand. Road borders are closed anyway so youd have to fly from there. Vietnam is a gréât option to spend a week. Much cheaper than thailand , cheap Air Asia flights loads of places to see.

Or theres Laos. Luang Prabang is beautiful. You can get to Laos from Chiang Mai , bus and boat. Gréât trip too.

Betty Hurford ...and THAT is what worries us. We would love to take a 100% legit tourist roadtrip in Laos with local friends, but will probably skip it. A bit sad.

Whether you will have issues or not will depend to a great extent on your history in Thailand

There are many Laos borders which require you to spend a night or two in Laos before allowing you to return to Thailand if you do not have a visa.

As far as Myanmar, all land borders have been closed to foreigners for years. There's only one border at Ranong/Kawthong that requires a boat trip.
