Hi All.

I want to do a motorbike (for scooter only not for big bikes) licence in Thailand. I don't have any driving licence. The questions are the following:

If I'm spending 3 months in Thailand can I do this?

Can I get a Residence Certificate if I'm staying in a hotel and not renting a condo?

I want to do this next January and o can't find answers for this 2 questions.

TLDR : Answer Summary
The post seeks to clarify whether an individual can obtain a motorbike license in Thailand while spending only three months in the country without an existing driving license, and whether a Residence Certificate can be acquired while staying in a hotel rather than renting a condo. Responses indicate that obtaining a Residence Certificate is possible by using a hotel address, although some immigration offices may require a 90-day report which the user won't have filed. Additionally, while riding a scooter without a license may come with insurance complications, some suggest that temporary licenses can be pursued without a prior license.

Dont need 90 day report before bike purchase in Pattaya. Get Thai licence quickly through TikTok Jomtien agency 1500 baht all in. Pay small deposit to dealer take invoice and proof of hotel or condo to immigration get certificate of residence go back to dealer buy bike.

You go to the motor department office , they'll tell you how to proceed .quite easy

>If I'm spending 3 months in Thailand can I do this?

IF you do not have a motorcycle license, if you get injured, the insurance company will probably not cover you. Medical care in Thailand is inexpensive, but you're still looking at 100K+ THB for any serious accidents.

>Can I get a Residence Certificate if I'm staying in a hotel and not renting a condo?

MOST immigration offices will only issue a residency certificate after you filed your first 90 day report. SOME embassies offer certificates that are accepted in lue of of a residency certificate.

I spent enough time in Thailand to know what happening if you drive bike without licence and have an accident. But this is in any country not just Thailand.... My question was can I get a thai motorbike licence if I just spending 3 months in the country... I'm not a first timer ;) and looks like in my embassy I can get the certificate πŸ™

exactly, and the minimal insurance provided by the rental would not cover much. If you injured another, welcome to the Thai legal system.

I spent 4 months riding a scooter in Thailand. I just had to pay a 500 baht no helmet ticket once at Samui. Don't worry about it. Just have 500 baht always under the seat to pay the cop if you need to.

you are very smart, do these things for yourself. But don't recommend these things to people.

This is very poor advice what happens if your involved in an accident ? No licence NO INSURANCE have you any idea the cost of medical treatment... I wonder if you drive around your own country without a license and only worry about receiving a small fine...... Sound to me very irresponsible let's hope you never have a accident
Hovvard ******
@Tony *****
well, medical treatment costs about a tenth in Thailand of what it costs in the US, but anyway...

that's what I don't want. I spent 7 months in Thailand I was stopped 2 times no fine because they was searching drugs. But If I'm not lucky on my next 3 months I don't want to pay 500baht every time when I'm riding. I'm wearing helmet always.

You can get a residence letter, but being you won't be staying over 90 days you'll not have filed a 90 day report with immigration so the only place you can get one is from your embassy, and at Β£50.
Garrett ***********
@Ko**
Not all immigration offices. Chiang mai will issue a CoR to anyone, even on a tourist visa.

@Kool ******
ok Thank you that's okay for me. Worth it for me that Β£50. Anyway they can give this if I stay a hotel or I need to rent a condo?
Kool *******
@Istvan ********
they don't care at the embassy. It is just a letter you fill in, and they notarize it. A hotel is fine, but use the street address and room number to be safe.

thanks. This is very helpful πŸ™

Yes the certificate has some requirements but you can put down hotel address and depending on where you are have different express fee. I would get a Thai number first and find a school that can help you with paperwork and testing.

But you can do all by yourself as well.

In Chiang Mai the Honda Safety Riding Part gives lessons from beginners (2 day course) to big bikes (another 2 day course) using their bikes and on completion of each course they give you a certificate to take to the Transport Office and a list of other documents that you will need (Doctors certificate and Residence certificate). Or if you have a bike licence from your home country it is easy enough to get a Thai licence from the Transport Office

If you decide to come to Chiang Mai, I have an Airbnb room available close to the Honda school.
