ORIGINAL POSTER
My wife and I are travelling around the beautiful southern Islands of Thailand. We have already extended our visa by 30 days at the very helpful Phuket Immigration Office in Patong.

We need to extend it again and know that we have to leave the country and then return to be granted another 30 day extension.

Our question is can this be done between Koh Lipe and Langkawi travelling by return ferry and staying in Langkawi for 3 nights..?

We would appreciate any advice…

TLDR : Answer Summary
The user is seeking advice on extending their visa by leaving Thailand and returning via ferry from Koh Lipe to Langkawi, staying for 3 nights. Various commenters confirm that this is possible but caution that extensions are at the discretion of immigration officers. There is a discussion on the specifics of visa-exempt entries and extensions, with some comments indicating it can be done easily while others warn about potential denial based on immigration officers' perceptions.

I would check that it is still an active sea border. I went to enter to koh Lipe via langkawi last August and it still was not opened up after covid.

Hi could anybody help me I’m on a 30 day visa but here for 58 days when’s the earliest time can I go to immigration I don’t want to leave it last minute to get a 30 extension thanks for your help

Yes, it definitely worth going to Langkawi, some beautiful beaches and chilled spots there ..... several ferries a day to and fro Kih Lipe and Langkawi . . . Enjoy ....

Langkawi is a nice trip, lovely Island. It's great for a couple of days and can enjoy Hatyai when you return

I was disappointed with Langkawi, and wouldn't recommend it, but that's just my opinion of course. The man made features of buildings and infrastructure, from resorts to private homes, and shops and restaurants, had absolutely no consideration put into it, all very bland, lacking any creativity or design. more concrete than I'd imagined. Horrible advertising everywhere, huge billboards and banners, with no consideration for its situation, clashing colours and themes. Nothing cute, or quaint, or cool. There won't be any interior or exterior design ideas you'd want to take home with you.

@Dan *******
on a 3 day visa change I don't usually look for architectural inspiration as a primary motivation. I stayed there on a lovely beach surrounded by nature (you know it's a large island). The local food and people were wonderful and it was a very pleasant way to spend a long weekend.

that's good then. But having grown up as a child, between Penang and Singapore maybe my senses were spoilt. And yes the jungle is lush. On future visa trips you could consider the lesser known 'Wang Prachan Boundary Post' near pedang besar, situated within an actual national park, I forget the name. The approaching 90-120 minutes drive is really enjoyable. Also the drive to Rayong, again the final 90-120 mins, firstly through durian farms along the top of the ridge of mountain, then into lush rainforest and national park. Stay over on the Rayong side. Some interesting accommodations, a botanical gardens, military compounds, memorials and museums, and some interesting buildings scattered about the town. And you are the only white man in town. Good luck.🙏🏻

Yes you can and you can also go to Burma by Ranong

In Phuket Agents organize 1 day trip for visa run
Nongnuch ********
@Richard *******
"border run" . .you don't do "visa runs" to Ranong as there is no Thai Embassy or a Thai Consulate to be visited for a "visa" on the Myanmar side. You just border bounce
Richard ********
@Nongnuch *******
i m really Sorry Sir for my mistake but I thought there is a Thai Embassy in Kawthaung

I would like to add: the 30 days extension of a second visa-exempt entry is upon the discretion of the Immigration officer. It is NOT guaranteed. One needs to be prepared, that after a total 90 days stay on a visa-exempt entry stay permit, any extension can be denied and you might get stamped "application denied, you have 7 days to leave the kingdom"

@Nongnuch *******
Hang on, a moment ago you said there's a rule, now you're saying there isn't! Lay off the pipe FFS!

Now nongnuch makes the rules !!!!! Germans will dominate the world again !!!!555

@Nongnuch *******
There's no rule to enforce. Please provide the actual legislation 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣. I won't hold my breath waiting.
Nongnuch ********
@Roberto ********
just read the other thread,
@Brandon ***********
confirmed it. Yes there is no written rule, as I said before it is upon the officers discretion, and they will enforce it many more times than they will allow it, yet it passes your attention becuase you are not standing at the borders counting, and you are not an Immigration volunteer. You get your wisdom from the bar stools
Roberto *********
@Nongnuch *******
Embassies don't make the rules. They're just way out of date. People are doing back to back 30+30's continually
Nongnuch ********
@Roberto ********
just read the thread in this group from "Jordan Hall" . . same topic, same timing. you cannot spend more than 180 on visa-exempt within one year, and you cannot spend more than 90 days within 180 days. Embassies don't make the rules, you are right, but an Immigration officer might insist that the rule is enforced and don't allow you a second extension
Roberto *********
@Nongnuch *******
There's no legislated maximum time for visa exempt entries. The 90 in 180 was abolished about 15 years ago. Very easy to get 2 x visa exempt entries and extensions giving 120 days consecutive. No problem.
Nongnuch ********
@Roberto ********
not true. Just go check the websites of Thai embassies London, Paris, Den Haag etc it is still up and going
Roberto *********
@Nongnuch *******
Not going to happen
Nongnuch ********
@Roberto ********
did you check the embassy's website: "using a visa exempt entry mustn't be any longer than 90 days within 180" . . . . the second extension would result in 120 days stay on a visa exempt, and that's why this is definitely not 100% sure
Duncanc **********
Yes
Damo ******
Simple answer is yes. Leave and come back you will get stamped in again for another 30 days which you can extend again if you wish.
Roberto *********
@Nongnuch *******
Are you counting those being denied entry? 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Nongnuch ********
@Roberto ********
the 30 days extension of a second visa-exempt entry is upon the discretion of the Immigration officer. It is NOT guaranteed. One needs to be prepared, that after 90 days stay on visa-exempt entries, an extension can be denied and you might get stamped "application denied, you have 7 days to leave the kingdom". The risk is obvious. The rules as well.

Haha! It's easy. Hundreds are doing it every day.
Nongnuch ********

are you standing at the border and count them?
Roberto *********
@Nongnuch *******
Nothing's defjnite, but very easy to get another extension. It won't be denied
Nongnuch ********
@Roberto ********
nothing is "easy" - it CAN get denied, it is up to the officer's discretion

My buddy just got his second 30-day exempt entry extended with zero problems. When he leaves he'll have been here for 120 days consecutively with just one hour over the Laos border out of that, so what you're saying is codswallop. The

rule was abolished in 2009. 😂😂😂
Nongnuch ********
@Steve *******
you are full of bar-stool tell tales . . . . . the

rule has NEVER been abolished 😃 if a border official thinks that you are misusing the visa-exemot entry for too long, he will refuse entry. This is common knowlegde in every English speaking Facebook Thailand group.
Roberto *********
@Nongnuch *******
Abolished about 15 years ago. Take your fake profile trolling elsewhere! 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

It is truly amazing how little you and
@Roberto ********
know. You say that there is no rule on how many times you can enter visa-exempt and receive a 30 days extension? Just visit the website of the Royal Thai Embassy London. Here on the page concerning the "visa-exempt entry", you can read the following. Well, the embassies don't make up the rules, rather Immigration does make up the rules. However, contrary to your bar-stool science, the rule is CLEARLY written on an official Thai government website!
Steve ********
@Andreas ********
Look, if you don't believe me just ask the respected guru Tod Daniels who knows Thai visas better than just about anyone. Ask him if there is still a RULE relating to 90 in 180, or 180 in a year. That will settle all this misinformation being bandied around

@Steve *******
Regarding the provision of “90 days within 6 months for visa exempt entry” on embassy websites

In fact, no one at the Thai Immigration knows of such a provision

On the contrary, the immigration website even states that you can make unlimited visa-free entries by air.

And I know of only few reports of anyone not being approved for a 30-day extension of a second consecutive visa-free entry.

Three years ago I informed the “Thai Visa Advice” group about this ominous "90 days in 180 days" rule.

It used to be written down on the website of the Thai Embassy London, UK. About two years ago, the text vanished.

So the claim that this rule was abandoned 15 years ago is DEFINITELY wrong.

The information obtained from the “visa guru” of the group was, that immigration is not complying at all. There is NO immigration “police order” that states that you can enter Thailand on a visa-exempt basis and not be in Thailand for more than 90 days within a 180-day period

What the embassies write often does not correspond to the immigration process. The two belong to different ministries and are subject to different rules.

But BEWARE! The times of consecutive limitless “visa exempt entries” are definitely over.

In any case, you can make two visa-free entries per calendar year by land and unlimited entries by air.

This might include two 30 day extensions. It is however up to an officer’s discretion.

One thing to keep in mind is that beginning with your third consecutive visa-free entry, or your second or third application to another 30 days extension, you have to be prepared to be taken aside and asked about the purpose of your trip.

Then you should have the THREE famous proofs:

*** 20,000 THB in cash (can also be in another currency)

*** proof of accommodation for the next few nights, and

*** proof of onward travel out of Thailand within the expected stamped length of stay for visa-free entry

@Steve *******
I know him
Steve ********
@Andreas ********
So do I. Just ask him. He'll tell you how wrong you are. There is no rule 🤣
Andreas *********
@Steve *******
I already asked Tod Daniels 3years ago. There is no such rule since 2 years, when the embassy websites stopped to text it. . . . . . . BUT BEWARE! You will need to take this with a pinch of salt. There WILL for sure be the moment when an Immigration officer will deny a visa-exempt entry or the 30 days extension, if your passport is lined with these stamps. If you think you can do this over and over again, you will definitely fail. There is NO "unlimited" number of visa-exempt entries any more
Steve ********
@Andreas ********
And noted that you have removed your INCORRECT MISLEADING post and cut and pasted a long rhetoric TOTALLY UNRELATED to the topic which is a long-gone rule about 90 days in 180 days. Go take your nonsense elsewhere. You really don't have a clue! 🤣🤣🤣
Steve ********
@Andreas ********
Ok now you're twisting words. All I said was THERE IS NO RULE. You made an idiot of yourself with an out of date screenshot with lovely red lines and circles which means ABSOLUTELY NOTHING. Nice attempt at a back pedal by quoting stuff totally UNRELATED to any RULE. In future, check your FACTS before flapping your gums
Andreas *********
@Steve *******
The following I copied from a statement given by an expert in this group:

Immigration are basically looking for a trend.

If you have multiple back to back entries that aren’t typical of a “normal” tourist then they may feel that you’re trying to exploit the tourist visa /exempt entry scheme to stay long term in Thailand without a correct visa (and potentially working here).

Typical tourist activities would be entering Thailand, visiting somewhere else in SE Asia and re-entering Thailand to go home.

This wouldn’t raise red flags for the officer. Back to back entries and extensions could.
Steve ********
@Andreas ********
This post has nothing to do with your claims that there is a 90 in 180 day rule. Lay off the pipe PLEASE!!
Roberto *********
@Nongnuch *******
Any entry is at the discretion of the immigration officer. The OP will definitely get another 30 day visa-exempt stamp.
Nongnuch ********
@Roberto ********
but not "definitely" a second 30 days extension, is what I wrote
Nongnuch ********
@Kris *******
please mind your terminology: you will enter Thailand on a second "visa-exempt entry" coming from Langkawi and will get stamped in at the Koh Lipe Immigration office for 30 days. You did not get your "visa extended" because this is technically not possible. You got your "30 days stay permit" extended by 30 more days, since you didn't have a visa at all upon first entry
Michael ********
Yes you can but needs someone to answer the specifics with Koh Lipe long time since i have done that way
Paul *******
You can only buy one extension. Now you must leave the Kingdom.

they specifically said "and know that we have to leave the country and then return to be granted another 30 day extension"...

Did you have some 'useful' information for them? Maybe go back and read 'all' their post could be helpful 😁😁

did you read the post ?? they already said they know they need to leave ... they were asking about a particular route to travel ... it really helps if you read the OP 😅👍
