Hi, I’m visiting my wife’s family in Thailand soon and need some guidance with the visa situation please.

The duration of my visit is 4 weeks in total and I’m an Indian citizen from Canada. I already applied for a tourist visa at the embassy however it’s taking a long time and I’ll be travelling soon.

So, I’m planning to get a visa on arrival when I reach Thailand but as I understand, the duration for this has been reduced back to 15 days now so is there a way to extend it after I arrive, maybe based on marriage?

What happens if my tourist e-visa gets approved while I’m inside Thailand? Can I just continue being there?

TLDR : Answer Summary
A visitor from Canada, an Indian citizen, is seeking guidance on his visa situation for a 4-week trip to Thailand to visit his wife's family. He applied for a tourist visa, but due to delays, he considers obtaining a Visa on Arrival, which has been reduced to 15 days. He inquires about the possibilities of extending the Visa on Arrival based on marriage and what happens if his tourist e-visa gets approved while he is in Thailand. Community responses indicate that Visa on Arrival cannot be extended, even for family reasons, and activation of a tourist visa must occur outside Thailand.

Hi everyone, so I came here on “visa on arrival” and went to the immigration office with my wife for an extension but they told me that I can’t extend visa on arrival on this basis and they can only extend TR or Non-Im O visas unfortunately 😕 .

I looked at the immigration website and the extension section for visiting Thai spouse doesn’t mention any such requirements however the immigration officers didn’t budge even though I tried to explain and just suggested me to fly out and re-enter.

Is it worth going to an immigration office in a different province (of course I would book a hotel there and travel there etc)?

Visa on Arrival is not eligible for a tourist extension.

You mention you're visiting your wife's family. Is your wife going to be with you? If yes then you may be able to apply for a "visiting Thai family" extension which is 60 days. But you can only get this if your wife is also traveling and also goes to immigration with you along with the required paperwork.

You cannot activate a tourist visa inside of Thailand, you can only activate it upon entry. So if you receive it while you're in Thailand then nothing happens. If you want to use it you would need to leave and re-enter the country and present your visa at that time.

Thanks a lot for this information!

Yes, my will be with me as well and can definitely goto the immigration office with me as well.

So, it means that VOA can be extended based on “visiting Thai family” but not for other reasons?

Is a Canadian marriage Certificate sufficient for this purpose? I assume that birth certificate isn’t needed for spouse?

I'm not sure about the specifics of what is needed to apply. The image is just a general requirements list but each office also may have specific requirements that vary.
