Hello, we have a 90 day single entry non-o. We need to extend or get a 90 day tourist visa. Is this even possible? We're American. What embassy do we need to go to?

TLDR : Answer Summary
The user is inquiring about extending their 90-day single entry Non-O visa or obtaining a 90-day tourist visa as American citizens in Thailand. Several comments provide guidance on possible options: applying for a tourist visa at a Thai consulate in nearby countries (like Vientiane, Laos), and doing a 'border run' to get a 30-day visa exempt entry. It's noted that overstaying leads to significant fines, with options to extend the stay or transfer to an educational visa being discussed.

The 30 day Exempt Entry stay can also be Extended for 30 days at a Thai Immigration office for 1900 Baht.

so we could go in and out of burma? as simple as that? even though our last entry was on a 90 day non 0? we could do a traditional border run and get the 30 tourist?

Umm, there is no such thing as a 30 day tourist entry :/ BUT you could do a "border-bounce" and get a 30 day visa exempt entry without a problem. (y)

Be advised you can only get TWO 30 day visa exempt entries by a land border in a calendar year..

Another suggestion now that you mentioned you're waiting for paperwork to go get an ED visa would be to go to the border, stamp out of thailand, stamp in&out of another country and stamp right back into thailand to get a 30 day visa exempt entry stamp.

You could also extend that stamp by 30 more days if you needed to as well

@Ka***
, overstay fines are 500 baht a day and cap out after 40 days overstay at 20K baht, you are banned from thailand for a year if you overstay more than 90 days and turn yourself in, if you're caught out on an overstay of under 1 year you're banned for 5 years.

An overstay is NOT the way to go..

got it. thank you!

, I would say go to the thai consulate in Vientiane and apply for a single entry tourist visa. That consulate is the most user friendly and you will have no problem getting a single entry tourist visa there.

Be advised, while a tourist visa is valid for 90 days all that means is you have that long to enter thailand and get stamped in for 60 days. You could extend that by 30 more days at the immigration office though for 1900baht

Do you know the overstay rules/fines? Wondering if it would be cheaper to overstay, then once the education visa is ready, leave then vs leaving twice as we're currently planning

If you are unable to provide the documentation to get an extension on that Non-O visa at the immigration office you could go to a thai consulate in another country and get a single entry tourist visa. It would stamp you in for 60 days when you arrived and you could extend that by 30 more days at the immigration office for 1900baht.

You could go to just about any thai consulate in a nearby country to get one. A lot of people go to the consulates in Vientiane Lao or Penang Malaysia to get tourist visas.

you could apply but it would be denied and you for 1900baht would get a 7 day stamp and then have to exit the country

Without the paperwork, we couldn't go to immgration now and extend the non-o's, right?

Thank you so much for this info. Yeah, we're not working with our old foundation any more so we don't have an invitation letter for a non-o. We got scared we may not be able to get a tourist visa. So we'll head to Lao and get a single entry visa. THat's the best route?

For what reason did you get the 90 day Non-O visa?
