TLDR : Answer Summary
Many commenters agree that it is not currently possible to convert a Special Tourist Visa (STV) to another type of visa, such as a Retirement Visa (Non-O), while remaining in Thailand. The STV allows for a stay of up to 270 days with extensions, but it is explicitly stated that it cannot be changed to another visa type while in the country. Several users recommend applying for the Retirement Visa from the home country or entering on a tourist visa that allows for easier transitions after arrival.
NON-O RETIREMENT VISA RESOURCES / SERVICES
Go to the Retirement Visa Section for information on requirements, including age restrictions, financial requirements, and necessary documentation.
For immediate assistance, contact Thai Visa Centre directly via LINE at @ThaiVisaCentre or Email them.
Explore recent discussions by using the Non-O Retirement Visa tag in the search box at the top of the page.
How do you know? Can you provide more information?

You would like to avoid a trip out of the country and coming back in and going to quarantine again get a retirement visa. But this is exactly what will happen if you don’t change and come in on a tourist visa

Yes no problem. But I reccomend using a Visa service company. 100% guaranteed you can get retirement Visa
this is Thailand. Anything is possible. I arrive on a 30 day Visa exemption in March 2020 and obtained a retirement Visa without leaving the country. Don't listen to what the official rules might be because they are not always what occurs in real life. I'm telling you that if you that it is 100% guaranteed if you hire the right people.
I did it all myself. Of course, if someone is concerned about the time and effort involved, it makes sense to use a visa agency. But as you say......."if" you hire the right people. The number of untrustful visa service agents in Thailand is high.

Thailand cannot afford going into lockdown.....fact!
That's the reason why they opened early, that's the reason why theyre monitoring incoming numbers on a weekly basis. Thats the reason why there's now talk of 10 day quarantine and extending visas the extra 2 weeks so it doesn't turn off potential visitors on returning.
And those who've experienced this (prior to the "rona") that the Thai government thought they could survive without certain long term stayers, staying.

I suggest he avoid the ELITE VISA - no stabiliy or guarantee...

Pascal. Tony is only express his opinion of what might happen in the near future. He never said this was factual. I myself agree with Tony

I wouldn't suggest coming to Thailand now as they are experiencing a second wave of the virus and I suspect we will go into lockdown soon.

Oh yes google and farang forum are very helpful :)
certainly you read the news when they were coming out with the STV (just like we all did) where they specifically stated that you cannot use an entry from an STV to convert to another visa type inside the country.
In fact it was announced at the same time they told people about the STV being available. :( Did you mis-remember or did you just not believe it?

David Broadfoot he's gotta GO there and get the visa issued in his passport, so he should get that STV voided so there's NO problem with someone looking at it as a valid (yet unused) visa when he goes for the 90 day Non-O from a tourist visa entry once he's here
Tod *********
David Broadfoot he could indeed go back get that 200 dollar visa voided and then get a 60 day single entry tourist visa.

as people said, you will get almost 9 months out of an STV, so hopefully this covid shit show is over and you can bounce out/back
OR
you can find an agent that will "grease the wheels" and be able to do the in country conversion to a Non-O visa from an STV..
just get tourist visa at the thai embassy In your country if you can. Then you can switch to many different types once inside. You can get a 90 day visa easy. More than enough time to figure out next step.
sure I did but he’s asking if he should go change it at the embassy (somehow). My suggestion is he does if he can because of the limitations as we’ve all been saying. If he’s coming for max 9 months...cool he can come. If he wants to stay long term try to change to regular 90 day visa.
Have a good holiday season everyone.
Merry Christmas from Chiang Mai and Pai! 🙏🏼

David Broadfoot The standard TR Tourist Visa is Not a 90 day Visa. It is a 60 day visa with option to get a 30 day Extension at Immigration for 1900 Baht
— The STV is very easy and given same day here. This is the one good thing.
— I gathered all my info for the retirement visa but overlooked the health insurance (I did purchase the health COVID insurance). Otherwise I have all required docs.
— arriving from Taiwan the retirement visa is only good for 90 days max (pending extension)
Without the health insurance doc, I walked out of the Taipei Thai embassy with a STV only.
Thanks for your help, seems Thai news changes overnight sometimes? Hoping to get the most current updates from this group.

Try this thought. On the STV which is in actuality a 270 day stay by using the two 90 day Extensions. Overall cost is modest too. 270 days is a long time. If you arrived in January - your stay would be through September 2021. In this time it is quite possible that Thailand will open the border and neighbor countries could too. A bit of normalcy. No guarantee of this as you know. But if any degree of normalcy comes about you could go to Thai Consulates in Penang, Malasia, Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam and elsewhere and get another kind of visa even an O Visa 90 days,, Tourist Visa, etc. Then Reenter Thailand. Next at the appropriate time apply for the next step. There has been little experience with the STV but it is possible you could set up a Thai Bank Account - prepare your financial requirements. Be ready to go.
A Special Tourist Visa is good for a 90 day stamp when you enter AND you can get TWO additional extensions of 90 days eacch

As far as I know you cannot change from stv to other visas. You can extend it up to 9 months total then have to leave.
Best is to get a regular tourist visa at the thai embassy to get inside and then will be able to change once inside.

Who knows. It's a new visa that's only been issued for about a month. In theory you could apply for a Non Imm O visa in country based on being over 50 years old before covid kicked in. Does get you 9 months in the country though.
, I already have STV for a Feb. departure. Would like to avoid an extra trip to the Thai embassy in Taipei for the visa change if it can be done after arrival in Thailand.

Philip James. Apply for a retirement visa from your home country. You don't have to shift 800,000 baht to a Thai bank account. If you convert in country, you'll have to move the money.
At this point it cannot be changed in country. If you cancel the STV and leave the country to apply for a new visa upon re-entry you’ll have to quarantine in an asq.
So if you qualify for the retirement visa I’d say do it now before you come and arrive using that visa not the STV.

From everything I’ve read the STV cannot be changed to any other type of visa while in country. But who knows what will happen in 9 months (if you do the extensions).
Why not just apply for the retirement visa now?

No. And no.

No, its specifically states cannot convert to other visa, if you intend converting you are better off coming in on TR visa. I maybe wrong But if you qualify you can get non O for retirement from embassy.
