Iโ€™m on an ED visa in Chiang Mai. My stamp is for Apr. 22. I plan to leave the country by then.

Ideally, Iโ€™d like to cancel my ED visa in Chiang Mai and the spend 2-4 weeks roaming around down south, before leaving by Apr. 22.

Is this possible? i.e. What is usually the largest gap between showing up at immigration to cancel oneโ€™s visa and the official ending date for study?

Many thanks.

TLDR : Answer Summary
The user is inquiring about the possibility of canceling their ED visa in Chiang Mai before the official study end date of April 22. Responses indicate that it is typically not possible to have a gap between canceling the visa and the official study end date. Users suggest obtaining a letter from the school stating the end date, which is usually the same as the visa's expiration. This letter is crucial for visa cancellation, and it is recommended to approach the school or the immigration office for precise information.

You can't have ANY gap ๐Ÿ˜ฎ you get the letter from the school saying when you stop studying and that date is the date the immigration office cancels your extension from. There is no stop studying but still be on the ED visa extension ๐Ÿ˜• unless you can get the school to give you paperwork saying you stop when your extension runs out

Thanks, by โ€œcancelโ€ I meant go

to immigration with ideally an Apr 22 letter as early as possible. Iโ€™ll slog on over and let you know what they say.

i have seen them do it about 3 weeks before the termination of study date on the school's paperwork, but that's the earliest I have ever seen and they had to PUSH hard to get immigrations to do it that early.

Your other option would be to cancel the extension then exit/re-enter the country to get on a 45 day visa exempt entry and use that time to tour thailand ๐Ÿ˜‰ although doing that after comin' off an ED visa (even a valid one) has it's own perils ๐Ÿ˜ฎ

you get a letter from your school stating you're going to stop studying on xx date, (usually the last day of your current extension which you say is April 22) and you go to the immigration office about 2 weeks before that date and they will cancel it and then stamp you in until the termination of study date on the school documentation.

There's no way to cancel it more than a couple 3 weeks early that I'm aware of.

Check with your school as they are the ones that give you the documentation and they'll know how early you can do it OR slog on over to the main immigration office in Chiang Mai and ask them, they'll know too
